Do Poruguese kitchens have cooker hood with extracter fans the same as the ones in UK. I only ask as when we looked at a property the same as we are having built...it just had a chimney affair over the hob.

Hubby is adament that is it...I am adament I want a proper cookerhood.
The builder cannot speak English and I have a feeling between the two of them. Being stuck in the UK I cannot just march into a Kitchen shop and have a look.

Hi Piglet - sorry, we just have a 'chimney' as well (no extractor fan) and I think this is the norm

PS Extractor fans are not always a good idea - have one on when you do a good flambe and watch in amazement as you set fire to the filter which happily melts into the sauce

But we have a cooker hood in the UK, by my logic...hey careful here as I am a woman...whats the difference...except you turn it off when cooking certain dishes.

But do you find the chimney affair effective in controlling the steam whist cooking?? Our place will be pretty open plan, so different to the UK I can see the steam hazying up the old Tele

The Portuguese system of open Chimney works quite well because of the Venturi type effect that sucks up the fumes because the light wind flowing over the chimney outlet leaves a slight pressure difference...thus the natural extraction..........BUT......I do get a bit annoyed when I get the odd bit of bird nest (And other things) dropping in..even though we have net around the outlet...AND when it really rains...yes a bit of water too......
We are currently building a new house and guess what.....our Portuguese builder made sure we keep up to date..and YES all his houses now have Hoods and extracters.....

Many of those available in UK are available in Portugal. €300 ish probably. All kitchen suppliers / fitters stock them. Work well but
can affect ventilation of woodburning stoves - e.g. by drawing air from lounge under a closed kitchen door

Try my Dutch friend in Lagoa; a side streat near the Fatacil at the Business Park: "Elite Kitchens". (it is just beside the "jet-ski shop".)

Lagoa is about 60 km away from Vale da Telha in the direction of Faro. It is the next town after Portimão on the EN 125; when you drive to Carvoeiro you have to turn off at Lagoa.

Hi Piglet, you could also try Importeco they are a kitchen place who we used, also in Lagoa, by the Fatisil, as you come down the N125 into Lagoa, the first roundabout you need to take the third exit (not forgetting that you have to go right first to go across the road! this took me a few times to work out first time we went out to the Algarve, got quite a few car horns basting at me!! with every right!!!) then at the next roundabout (mini one) take third exit, their place is at the bottom of this road on the right, ask for Rui, he speaks very good English and will show you cooker hoods extractors and give you prices.
