We are currently only burning wood, but I have no idea what has been burned previously in the fire and I am sure it needs sweeping! And of course we'd rather be safe than sorry and all that.
I did see a lorry carrying coal the other day. Should have had a word with the driver as I would love a coal fire.

Hi sandy, I don't know about tricks.....but for cleaning we use some stuff called Triclean: http://www.tria.pt

I agree with guest. If you have an adjustable flue on your woodburner the trick is to find the balance which avoids a very high rate of wood consumption but which does not lead to sooting or tarring.
I find that with my woodburner (an Ecology series 700 with a two speed fan) there is no real problem at this time of the year. The difficulties start when it gets really cold and I need to keep the fire in all night. I invariably find that the glass is tarred in the morning even with very dry wood. Except for the most serious tarring up I find that the degreasing spray anti gorduras and heavy duty kitchen roll paper does the trick. For the really grotty stuff I use a scraper with a stanley knife blade before the anti gorduras.
