Irrigation

We have just received a terrifying water bill and wondered if anyone could advise on the use of an irrigation system for quite a large garden. The previous owners used to have the system on every other day but unfortunately our gardener decided this was not enough and changed it to twice a day. Hence the water bill! What is the recommended dose of water for a garden with lawn to keep it looking good? When over in CVO last month we turned the system off for the winter but do not want any more of these large bills next summer.

We have just bought a villa and are planning the garden. I was horrified to find out how much water costs(thnks to this forum) So unlike you we can plan accordingly. We are going to plant a particular type of grass very hardy, that requires hardly any water.

I am a little pushed for time now but have a look under gardening post. So if your grass is this type it will not need huge amounts of water, certainly not daily, and it will "come back to life" in the winter. Apparently "English" grass does need watering every day and we have been prewarned about this

I do not have any personal exprience of this yet and have been given this advice from several differnet sources, but this is what I will be working on.
