Does anyone know if Algarve Shopping will open on Christmas Eve; and if so, until what time?

We want to purchase our turkey rather than bring it (ready cooked and sliced) from home like last year.

Last year the Christmas turkey nearly landed me in jail! Sharen sliced it and packed it in a tupperware box and didn't realise she'd packed the knive in there too.

I 'smuggled' it through customs in my hand-luggage and discovered it when we arrived at the villa. The xray machine failed to spot it!

Sorry Michael cant help with your question but while Im here does anyone also know if ANYTHING will be open on new years day?? We arrive first thing in the morning and will need supplies .
Guess that 3 in the morning start buggers up my new years eve!!!

Scary thought about the knife not being spotted on xray machine.

Nothing to do with C.V.O., but a few years ago my family and I travelled to Canada via Washington and on a military airplane the weekend before a certain Mr. R. Regan was sworn in as president, in the bottom of my handbag was a small chopping knife, bought the day before we travelled and put in a safe place and forgotton. On arriving in Canada, 2 days later and emptying out the bag low and behold the knife appeared, maybe security aint that good, its no wonder idiots get through.

they'd be crazy to close on christmas eve!!! Yes, everything will be open. Christmas day only the small local mini markets will be open, like João Cardoso or Ana

with regard to enquiry about supplies on new years day. you could try Leclerc on the road from Portimao to Alvor open everyday apart from xmas day.

Thanks for that Lila.Will certainly try there.My suitcases will be too full of things for the villa to pack food as well! Got told off for excess baggage last time

Me too, we got told off for exceeding the personal baggage allowance
in one suitcase - we had tried to pack all of our belongings (2 adults, 3 children) into one suitcase, but were told we had to distribute the weight allowances into several suitcases?, seems mad to me, so in future we will take five suitcases instead of one very large one?
Anybody know why?

I expect it's because the poor dears lifting the luggage can't cope with the weight.

Bit of a silly question tricky, or are you winding us up?
I expect you found one suitcase heavy to lift, so the check-in and baggage handlers would also. I know you'll say that it's all automatic transfers, etc., but I suppose from the human side a large case can be very awkward and bulky. You're much better spreading the load and then you have extra corners to put in all your small gifts!

Dont see why you should call Tricky's question 'silly'!
Id ask the same myself.
When I went to work in CVO few years back...I took the most enormous bag for the proposed long stay..very heavy indeed....but had no probs whatsoever!
so I think its 'mad' too ....to have to take 5 instead of 1.
who makes up these silly rules?
Think guest is right 'poor dears cant cope with the weight'..most very large bags have wheels anyway dont they?

There's nothing worse than being stuck in an airport check in queue watching all the excess baggage check in passengers whingeing and moaning at check in staff.

I always thought the weight allowance was there for OBVIOUS safety reasons ie. a plane can only carry so much weight etc., more weight, more fuel=more pollution?!!!!!!!!
One experience I had,20 passengers including myself reached destination without any luggage at all - reason given by airline staff to us was because they had had to deal with too much excess baggage and if our luggage had gone on plane, the plane would have been delayed!!! So we had no clothes etc. for 3 days and other selfish passengers had more than they could f&*&&g well carry.

See.... the guests seem to have a bit more common sense than the "senior" members. Things change and there IS a reason for the rules laid out by the airlines believe it or not!
How many times have we seen people struggling with HEAVY suitcases, wondering how they got so much in them in the first place.
And the number of people who seem to take more than the allotted one piece of handbaggage is amazing. Thankfully the airlines seem to be getting wiser and not before time. (on one flight a guy was carrying a holdall, which turns out contained a massive toolkit - the reason he was stopped - he could hardly lift the thing - obviously he thought that he could take the baggage trolley on the aircraft as well!)
For my flights to Faro my handbaggage usually consists of the travel docs wallet, a camera case and magazine or paper.

But isnt 5 smaller luggage bags that are really packed full going to weigh just as much or more than one large one?
In my case(forgive the pun)..I was going to live&work there so I needed to take more than average..and as Ive said..I had no problems!
Ive been equally 'held up' by folk who have simply loads of small bulging cases..the trolley piled high!
