Reading through some of the posts here and seeing 'Stephen King' mentioned...we have a very small study which Mr King has mostly 'taken over' as H has every one of his works..books/videos/dvds/cassettes..the lot!
His favourite by far..he tells me..is 'IT'..now reading it for 5th time!
My youngest son readily confesses that he only read the book about halfway...it gave him nightmares..
To extend this topic (with Sue's permission?) have you ever been seriously affected by a book? I suppose it depends how impressionable you are?
When my son was a teenager..he had same thing happen with a 'Dennis Wheatley' book.(Haunting of Toby Jug)..
Mentioning Christopher Walken reminded me of the film 'Communion'(in which he starred)..but the film was a farce..almost a comedy in parts.totally unlike the book.
I read Whitley Strieber's 'Communion' (his truelife encounter with alien beings) about 10 years ago..and the follow up 'Transformation'...these books affected me..had nightmares..yet I continued to read them..fascinated
I love to get into a good book...but some can have a profound effect..not always a good one!
apart from my fav.Jane Austen (okay stop yawning)....all her books have a happy ending

Strange, I never got any e-mails to say that people had posted on this topic and was surprised to find out how well it was doing. I'm officially starting "katherine" by "Anya Seton" today after a long struggle to finish "Possession" by A.S. Byatt. It took me longer than I expected...have you ever been seriously affected by a book?
Ellie, since you are now started on Barbara Erskine you'll know all about feeling seriously affected about a book again. Saying that, "Child of Phoenix" is not a horror story per se - but there are others! Oh, and this story (I forgot to tell you) is the follow up of "Lady of Hay". You'll probably recognise some of the characters that are mentioned.
The main character in Child of Phoenix is the granddaughter of Matilda from "Lady of Hay"...if my memory is not failing me...Erskine tends to link her books in a way that is not necessary to have read the story orgins but it certainly makes it more interesting.
Enjoy the reading!

was it strange my asking if books sometimes had a powerful effect on one? or is it something else?

Hi Ellie
It's been out in paperback since early summer and published in hardback in 2003. ISBN NO. is 0-552-99704-8. It's a very popular read - top of the bookselling charts for some time. Some of the facts quoted are mind boggling although its not a book that you can read in big chunks due to the amount of information - let me know how you get on.
Regards

Since the topic is back up, I just finished reading M.Moore's "Downsize this" and "Dude, where's my country" and we are in a bigger mess that I thought
Get ready for another onslaught of snipes at GWB and "the establishment" - in short, testimony to Moore's political agenda and a worthwile read if you want a good laugh.
Oprah for president!

I have dozens of books that I have not yet read. Since having my two children I don't find I have the time to read. Whne I do I just fall asleep before finishing a page! I got halfway through a book just before having my first and have just decided to finally try to finish it, but can't find it now since we have moved
Fortunately Mr G has started to read his way through my books and is beginning with the Stephen King ones. Misery is currently sat in our bathroom (the book not Mr G).
