With regards to car insurance, do you have 3 levels of cover as with the UK?

ie Fully comp
third party fire and theft
third party only

If you are bringing your car over from the UK for 3 months does anyone know if you have to notify the insurers in the UK or take out separate insurance in Portugal...?

Many thanks

Yes there are varying levels of insurance here. Certainly comp and third party - with or without theft I think.

The insurance is expensive but it is value related and will reduce with the age of the car. Also comp includes cover for any driver plus usually tow in cover and car hire for so many days during repairs to the vehicle.

I have found the AFPOP cover with Medal very good. There is no excess on the comp policies under this scheme and for about 100€ I take out guaranteed no claim bonus retention in the event of claims. I had a small accident last year. The claim was settled quickly and I had a free hire car while mine was in for repair (at the main dealers) plus no excess or loss of NCB.

If you bring your car over for 3 Months..most insurance companies will cover free up to 90 days...over that there is a nominal charge......(I've had mine here for 3 years !!!!!...)

Before I moved here permanently I was insured with Saga (you have to be over 50) because they gave European cover for the whole period of the years insurance without any extra charge. Most of the UK insurance companies I tried would not give more than 3 months European cover and charged extra for it.

If you are prepared to take the risk your UK company is now required by law to give you basic Europe wide cover as part of your premium. The problem is that this is third party only.

Alternatively this link to OK Seguro gives you an online quote

I had a 60 percent no claims bonus in England…..came over here and bought a brand new car…..The dealer had an in-house insurance broker who gave me a printout with prices on different policies with different companies……I then showed them a letter of proof of the 60 pc discount and after a lot of hassle phone calls and emails from the broker to different insurance companies…… I got it!
So don’t forget to take with you details on any discount you may have in the UK…

UK registered Car in Portugal

To Guest (UK car in Portugal for 3 years)

Do you take it back each year for its MOT (assuming it is more than 3 years old) to get your Road Tax renewed?
