Pool safety

Post by Ellie 2 »

Sorry - me again. A further thought on pool safety. Does anyone know of any Company on the Algarve who is interested in supplying and fitting a safety fence in front of a pool? We understand that it will be law in France, as of this year, to have a safety fence in front of, or around a swimming pool. Maybe you already have one? If so I would be very interested to hear. No doubt, quite rightly, since the rest of Europe may be required to do the same, we should be looking at trying to follow suit.
Please contact me with your thoughts and any info on a company that you think may be able to help.

Regards. Ellie 2.

Our pool has a perimeter fence with a gate at either end. It is simple black painted wrought-iron and can be installed by many local builders. Several of our friends, and also guests who stay at our place tell us that they specifically look for holiday villas with fenced pools as a safety feature for their young children - possibly one reason why our occupancy rate has been as high as ever this year.

When I was looking into electric pool covers I saw a fencing system designed specially to screen off child access to a pool at a pool shop near Lagos on the 125. It is on the left before you get to Lagos and is in the same block as Raminhos e Raminhos the tile company.

If they bring in such a pointless law in France, I cannot see the French taking a blind bit of notice. Perhaps the most admirable French characteritic of late is their willingness to ignore pointless, stupid or just unpopular laws, Like no smoking in cafes, or serving soft cheese straight form the refrigerator.

There are thousands of everyday situations that are as risky as a non fenced swimming pool, many that are certainly a lot more risky..................like an unfenced road, an unfenced beach, and unfenced cliff top, an unfenced kitchen, and unfenced parent, and probably worst an unfenced and socially ambitious politican.

We have the fencing supplied by Jacob in Lagoa, he also mounts stairgates and other safety devices.

On a personal note, I find it disturbing, that lawmakers intend to take responsibility for watching over children away from the parents and place it in the "hands" of barriers and limitators.
Also disturbing, is the english way of handling liability claims that has led travel agents to dispair over such security features and warnings. It seems that people in England can actually claim for harm caused by their own stupidity (eg. harm caused by diving into a shallow pool that lacks depth markings and a "no diving" sign can cost the owner of the pool dearly...)

Pointless law it may be, but a bit of common sense also helps. I believe that fencing-in pools IS law in Australia where of course far more properties have pools.

Fencing in or protecting in some way is also now the law in Florida for ALL pools (in France it is only for pools belonging to premises available for rent.)

There is another solution to fencing in the right circumstances - a product called the 'safety turtle' - these are like wristwatches with a plastic turtle sensor which is 'locked' onto the child's wrist - if the turtle goes underwater for more than half a second it transmits to the base station wich lets off one hell of a load alarm - they don't cost the earth and the children seem to enjoy wearing them.

They can also be taken to the beach but they tend to be destroyed if activated by salt water - but then again easier to replace a wristband than your child.

There is company called Poolguard that specializes in Swimming pool safety nets, they look very good on the pool, much better than the fences, they also are 100% effective in that they do not allow the children to come into contact with the water.

Hi Gambrius

You are absolutely right.

The responsiblitlity should lie with the parent, but so often it is the child that rules the roast and many children today have no basic discipline or manners. Children are now spoilt and mollycoddled and when something goes wrong..its everyones fault except the parents.

I love kids but not the breed of monsters they are bringing up today...even the police cannot do anything with them.

Teaching a child to swim and the dangers of water like crossing the road should be a number one priority. Pool Barriers now.....kerbside barriers next....to stop little ones running in the road. Cliff tops fenced off. Rivers walks...we are now denied access.

Parents get a grip and take responsbilitly for your kids. No pool barriers are not necessary..better and more responsible parenting is.

Do everyone a favor and stick your stupid whining head under the surface of a pool and leave it there.

I think they ought to be in bed this time of night instead of posting such suggestions on here. This is a family friendly site :?
