Blimey! think I need my glasses fixing..Im seeing 2 of everything!
I agree with Gerry Piglet..dont think youll have any problems..you seem a young woman with open friendly nature and willing to 'fit in' .So folk will 'gravitate ' to you :)
but you do need a lot of patience..I didnt have that when first lived there..expected things to be done as I wanted them..on the dot..arrogant/and impatient..thats how I was at first
found the language so difficult..but eventually managed..altho had a lotta fun..with Port.mates laughing at my feeble attempts
and now..its no lie to say ..that I feel more at home in that little village by the sea than I do in my own country! :)
Im sure youll do well and I wish you all the luck in the world! :)

No if I am Ms P, I am talking re life in general wherever you live.

So taking all of those levels out of your equation does that leave you as a lonely guy with lots of "dosh"

Perhaps we go full circle and only recognise what we had, when it has gone?

no no…..I was referring to Nosey Parker: “I'd like to ask what attracts people here and what makes them stay?” Of course she was talking about Algarve not Portugal as a whole

Anyway…….. “So taking all of those levels out of your equation does that leave you as a lonely guy with lots of dosh"…….I may leave me with No.2 just about enough dosh to survive (which I currently have) but with a load of shallow ‘friends’ and no real love, security or the rest of it…..All I’m saying is No.4 may be lacking but it’s by far the least important to me…

Hi Piglet,

I think it depends on what you view as the simple things in life. Maybe my idea of simple and yours are very different. I certainly do not view myself as a very money orientated person. Far from it...in fact I have been called a hippie by more than one person here.

The simple things for me are having a small group of open, honest, interesting, broad-minded friends, going to a concert or to see a theatre play once in a while, possibly going to a nightclass to learn something new and having an all year round job which pays more than a pittance and so I don't have to worry about everything I buy and how I am going to survive in the winter.

As I said earlier I am not knocking the Algarve but just agreeing with Digger that it is not really a good place for younger people, who still need to work, have a bit of a social life and want to pursue other interests. It is very restrictive. It is great for holidays and older, retired people, who don't need to worry so much about their security.

I also agree with the view by Ms NP about the English actually being more open and friendly than the Portuguese (in general of course). When I lived in the UK we welcomed many Spanish, French and Italian newcomers to our group and helped them settle in and make friends, so they wouldn't feel lonely. I can't say that of the Algarvians I have met so far. I have to say my experience was a little better in Lisboa.

Digger

Perhaps you have just moved onto number 5. You have passed through all the different stages. Yes, it is a sad fact of life there are a lot of shallow people about...probably they have not reached no 5 on the list
Interesting I never thought Maslows Hierachy of needs would end up being discussed on a forum in Portugal.

Take care and keep smiling lifes short and you're a long time dead.

Disolutioned,

Appologies.. Yes, I am from a different age group and perhaps one, from the original hippy era. That eventually conformed.

I am between retired and young. Still need to work...but I think even the older people who are retired on limited pensions still have money worries, so you are not alone.

There has been several interesting debates running today, and at least I ahve got to know some of you a little better

Kind Regards
Piglet

Yes, yes, I was talking about the Algarve...

How does everyone feel after a day's work? I feel shattered and no signs of paying. Time to re-think my life. Again...So, ambitioning a small business with enough turnover to pay your bills and some commodities is not asking for a lot in most places, but it is in the Algarve.

Ellie you will be be friend for life...God I am not young, I am ancient. Just a twenty something mind in XX something body. I have banned all mirrors in the house

I certainly know what you mean about the patience :P we are always on time for appointments and everyone else 2omins late or not at all. "Oh I said Monday, but I never said which one "

We sat in the village square, under the trees watching people watching. not tourist, there is difinately a slower pace of life. We have nicknamed it the Portuguese walk. A slow leisurely amble. We are so stressed in comparison.

Many thanks for your good wishes, I really hope in time we can make it our home and make lots of good friends.

Has it ever occured to anybody that this maslow bloke may be wrong ..just because he sounds plausible dosent mean we have to be said and led by him ...there are crowds of wise men who wish to live totaly outside the rules of maslows laws and are they wrong..jaysus half of the problems in our lives are caused by people giving us standards and we destroy our lives trying to attain them..well digger if your happy with your life then screw maslow and forget no 4 ..thanks be to god he didn,t go for a nice round 10 and make a horlix of us alltogether...the bastard.

Hi

10...would that be the ten commandments now Gerry?

Malsows theory is plausible if we assess our own heirachy of needs, in terms of what is important to us as an individual. Perhaps what is important to one person is not to another. Different people from different cultures or social backgrounds have different values.

Goodness knows..we like to analyse and pigeon hole everything now.
Life is becoming just to complicated and our society so politically correct. If you are happy why analysis it, you can't bottle it or repackage it as a franchise.

Couldnt have put it better 'young' piglet :)
"If youre happy..why analyse it"!
theres too much of going into the ins and outs of everything..we're supposed to be natural arent we (well as natural as we can be in this modern world! )...dont we live by our feelings..our emotions..
we're animals for most part..yet we have something else..the ability to love.. also..in reference to Diggers remarks about 'social circle' ..we have an immediate instinct as to whether we 'like'someone or not ?
Do you find that? often at first sight we can know whether someone is 'our cup of tea' or not...
strange creatures aren't we? :)
