no beep at toll

Post by Sheila »

If you don't hear a beep when you go through the toll does it mean you haven't been charged?

No you will still be charged. Even if you remove the transponder from the registered vehicle you will be charged as normal from the numberplate camera!!

I have previously read about transponders that haven't beeped and have still collected the charges as intended but conversely from personal experience I have had the transponder beep and fail to collect the charges. I'm not sure that the beep does much more than confirm that the internal battery has some life remaining.

Have you online access to your transponder account to check?

If you've paid the rental company for the tolls then they will either be billed through the transponder as intended and if that fails it will be charged against the registration number. Either way you've paid and they've been charged. I wouldn't lose any sleep over it if I was you. You could mention to them on return that it didn't beep to see what their reaction is.

If you download the CTT app either from the App store (iPhone) or Google Play (Android), you can check if there is any tolls due.

For Android you can download it from here: https://play.google.com/store/apps/deta ... id.app.ctt
Iphone/Ipad: https://itunes.apple.com/en/app/ctt/id715615998?mt=8

Just click on the "Tolls" Menu and add the license plate number. If there is anything due, it will show in there.

The use of the CTT app should prove whether the transponder worked.

If there is no charge showing for the car, then the transponder worked. If there is a charge showing, the transponder didn't work. If the latter the rental company are ultimately responsible but won't realise until it's too late to pay (at a PayShop, Post Office etc). They should reimburse you if you settle the tolls for them.

Hi

This information is not correct. If the car has a transponder registered to it then whether or not it "bleeps" is not relevant. As I said before the payment will be taken in the usual way (direct charge to Bank in my case) and it is not the case that the charge will then appear as unpaid or will in any way be treated differently.

I know this to be fact as I sold a car, removed the transponder and subsequently had 7 journeys charged direct to Millennium. In discussion with Via Verde I was told that if the car is registered with them and has a transponder registered to that car then the charge is applied to the account in the usual way. In effect the transponder is not required at all!!!! After proving the sale I was refunded in full. The onus is on the seller to inform Via Verde or the charges will continue ad infinitum.

Since its a rental car, the situation is different. The rental car company can disable the transponder at will. They give you the option to buy the service. So, if the transponder doesn't register, Via Verder will not automatically charge the account. You have the option to pay it yourself at CTT station. I've done that myself, because in Lisbon Airport they charge you a daily rental fee for the transponder or a one time fee and I dont want to pay for it. I pay the toll directly on A2 and on the CTT site for A22.
