Of course youre right Piglet "freedom and the right to choose".....
but the fox doesnt have that, does he?
I interfered with huntsman once and it nearly/could have..cost me my life.My feelings were strong..passionate..and I suppose not clear thinking at that moment!
All I saw was a beautiful creature( a large dog fox) being pursued by pack of hounds and what I considered, great oafs on that other beautiful creature the horse.
The fox got away..and I stood there applauding..much to the grievance of the hunters!
But ..on looking back..it was a foolish thing to do..it should be done in a 'proper' way.hopefully by law!
Dear Oscar called it "The unspeakable chasing the uneatable".....
p.s. coming into the period when foxes start 'going thru' our gardens (specially here in the sticks)..looking for a mate..
at least half of all young foxes are killed on our roads..
so they have enough to contend with..leave them alone..please?

So the great debate has started eh……..
I do not believe foxhunting should be banned. It’s a traditional way to rid the countryside of this murderous vermin whilst giving the cunning creatures a fair chance. As the fox usually manages to outwit the hounds but on occasion get torn apart, and allowed to die the most natural death……better than suffering for a week with it’s leg in a gintrap or the humiliation of being cages up in a zoo.

Thanks for replies, I must confess I didn't think we would ever meet again after the recent site problems. To those who have replied in the positive, many thanks, and I can well imagine Ellie clapping as our friend Reynard got away from the hounds, unfortunately not many do. I'm hoping that we can get a real debate going on this subject without any name calling,(well not to much anyway). I seriously, do not understand in this day of technology why alternatives to ripping animals apart cant be found, mind you it must be teriffic fun,
but with what we see going on in our streets I worry for the Human? race.
I see that the wolf is being re-introduced into the Highlands, now thats a natural part of the food chain, no need to hunt the fox or hare to death.
Thanks for your comments Digger, could you spare a bit of you drinking time and explain the way of setting up a pole on the topic please.(not a hop pole)
By the way, I read that a brown bear attacked some people in a forest in Rumania, although I feel sorry for the one person that died and several that were injured, that poor animal has been tormented to the point of extinction. We all have rights to live and not be hassled by anyone, so lets offer that right to our wildlife.

Most of the people that i know that hunt tell me that in fairness the catching of the fox plays little or no part in the sport..the craic comes from the preparing for the day, the meeting of friends, the pagentry and of course the thrill of galloping across the fields...most of them told me they don,t expect to see a fox let alone kill one ..of course i,m speaking from an irish context ..smaller fields more hedges and cover and of course a lot of small farmers who dont want the hunt on their land good nor bad ..im from a city so im born anti hunt but when i see the calibre of the folk and their reasons for supporting it it tends to take the edge off my bite .

Excellent stirring from Digger.
Well of course fox hunting should be banned, it's totally barbaric. What amazes me is that the Uk newspapers, which appear to be written by people who never leave London, think that 98% of the countryside's entire income relies on a bunch of obnoxious nobs chasing foxes on horseback. This http://www.therockalltimes.co.uk/2004/0 ... eaten.html gives a more balanced viewpoint.
Like Ellie, I've met just the one hunter. We were doing a trial (driving old cars up muddy hills), really vile old bugger turned up on a horse who seemed to think that we shouldn't have been there, what with the entire countryside belonging to the pathetic remnants of the upper class.
Banging on about how hunting has been going for generations doesn't cut any ice at all. We don't burn witches, or execute murderers

Oh yes, all the yokels round here pop off most weekends for a spot of hunting. Hang on a mo, there aren't any hunts round here. Surely that means we are supposed to be overrun with foxes.
No, actually, they aren't 'farmers people' whatever that means. I don't give a stuff whether they 'care about the countryside and things'. It is completely irrelevent. There are a lot of people who care about the countryside who don't feel the need to slaughter its contents. I've met a lot of the hunting type, don't know if they actually hunt or not, but they do think they own the place either because they get vast Eu subsidies for running an unsuccessful business or because there family has lived in some unreasonably large house for donkey years. And they are the 'hunting is frightfully important to the countryside' set.
I have no objection at all to people dressing up and riding around the countryside. Dressing up is fun (new topic?). What I object to is chasing some poor fox for a few hours and then ripping it to bits for a laugh.
Why don't these brave hunters like drag hunting? I'm not back to dressing up, I mean where some peasant or other runs around with a smelly sack, then the dogs, horses and alcohol fuelled cargo charge around after that. Nothing gets hurt and most of the hooray henries wouldn't know the difference.

Oh yeah, destroying flora, fauna and wildlife, and creating a a long lasting blot on the landscape.Wonder the the vile bugger really is. Pity you weren't seen off with a shotgunpetermeachem wrote:. We were doing a trial (driving old cars up muddy hills),
And yes, I'm totally in favour of executing murderers, though perhaps you would thing that they were the real victims, caused by faults in the social system.
And finally, if it wasn't for the 'upper classes' providing the wealth and the know all, and being prepared to take the risk, then people like you would probably be still living in a 2 up 2 down rather than renovating a property in Portugal, which the locals cannot afford.
Talk about hypocrisy!!
