What happens when you achieve all 5? Do you set your "standards" higher? Or do you loose sight of the right path due to lack of objectives?

Hi Gerry

Re accumulation of wealth and putting the brakes on I could not agree more. How much money do some people need to be happy?
I suppose it is a bit like cupboard space, the more you have the more you need.

However, we return to Maslows Hierachy of needs..with regards to wealth some people will never be satisifed...and money feeds their happiness. So they never move on to the next stage.

I for one do not have the slightest interest in keeping up with the Jones, been there done it got the t-shirt. One day something happens and you turn round and say......"what's the point" there has got to be more to life and when you step outside the box...you either find peace and you look at those in the box and smile in sympathy or if you cannot find peacet...then you climb back into the box(aka Cage and you jump straight back into the Rat race.

Disillutioned, you sound like one of those people where the simple things in life do not make you happy.

However, it really annoys me when people with money say to people without..."money does not buy you happiness"

However, money buys you freedom and choice, lack of money certainly does not. the diference is recognising "how much is enough?"

Ponderous...

Hmmmm….

1 love, sex, warmth
2 money for housing, food and well fare
3 sense of security
4 social circle
5 The ability to grow spiritually

well I don’t live in Algarve (I think that’s where Ms P refers to) but I’m not far away………..and No.4 on Dr Phil’s list is all that’s missing here. However, after years of overdoing it on the socialising front I feel that for me No.4 could be incompatible with No.1, No.5 and perhaps No.3

Dont know about others here..but the 'social circle' bit is vital to me and afraid it doesn't abound where I live
whats your thoughts Su?

Am posting as a guest as at work. I had heard of Maslow pyramid back in school, probably psychology class. I crave balance. I need a bit of everything. Usually my spirtual side begins to fade when I'm trying to achieve security.

I don't consider myself ambitious. I am happy to work hard on something I love and simply have enough money to cover bills, food and non branded clothes.

The problem in the Algarve is surving. If you cannot make your ends meet the whole pyramid starts crashing down...I probably need to consider moving to Cascais or Sintra area. Places I like.

What I crave most of all from social life is meeting people like Ellie, with similar interests to mine. Not easy among my portuguese fellow friends - sorry. Also, I don't understand why the Portuguese think of the English as cold people, when it's the other way round.

My mum is portuguese and has met a few English people through me (including Ellie) and she always puts her foot down and she was never as welcomed as she was in England. Everytime she meets someone new they always welcome her with open arms.

How many portuguese do that? I'm sorry. In general, I prefer the English culture, as Ellie knows. Not saying it's perfect. I'm sure there are good and bad on both sides.

Hi Digger

No if I am Ms P, I am talking re life in general wherever you live.

So taking all of those levels out of your equation does that leave you as a lonely guy with lots of "dosh"

Perhaps we go full circle and only recognise what we had, when it has gone?

seems youre missing on the 'social circle' bit Digger ..as I/we are..but youre not 'really' missing it?
Its one of the things I love about Algarve and particularly Carvoeiro ..its the 'cafe society'..
to sit and observe..watch world go by...and it sometimes 'stops' ..you meet folk..make friendships..that is one of the most important things to me.
Ok ..it doesnt always 'work' ..but now and then you meet someone..and you 'gel'?
To be in love..be loved ..have someone care..is wonderful...dont abuse it..it should be treasured..nurtured...we learn a painful lesson if we dont observe these rules..
But..can mankind ever be truly happy..even with all the comforts..both physical/mental..when we know that..evenually..
we die ?
Not being morbid..realistic!
Its chucking it down here..so no work!) :(

Hi Ellie

No your not morbid, re death...Its a true saying
"life is not a dress rehearsal"
I have to say the Portuguese people we have met, they have been very kind with a great sense of humour at my efforts with the language.
But then we will not be living in a tourist area so this may make a huge difference.
I am a little concerned how we will get to meet people as Pidgeon Portuguese is really hardwork but joking aside we would at least like a mix of friends of all Nationalities. How we achieve this I do not know.

no no…..I was referring to Nosey Parker: “I'd like to ask what attracts people here and what makes them stay?” Of course she was talking about Algarve not Portugal as a whole
