Water rationing soon???!!!

headline in todays portuguese newpaper warns that if it doesnt rain soon coupled with the fact that the odeluca dam is not finished (2007?) then there may be water rationing.....now I wonder how our beloved gofer courses will fare??

thats where the Brits not in the lapdancing clubs chase a little ball round with a stick for hours and once finished playing, their only topic of conversation is IF only this...and if only that. Yawn...yawn...yawn. Perhaps if the golf courses cannot be cant maintained and they cant play golf, they will actually get a life and see Portugal for the beautiful charming country it is...warts and all

Not surprisingly, this was announced by the Ministerio de Ambiente this morning. The lack of rain, high temperatures and subsequent higher usage for gardens, etc has led to a severe water shortage in the Algarve.
If it does not rain enough this winter, water rationing will be inevitable.

As usual, conservation only becomes a topic when it is already way too late to avoid such drastic measures. As most golf courses are self-sufficient, the call goes out to villa owners across the algarve to implement methods to conserve mains water, collect and re-use the rainwater that runs off their roofs unused and landscape their gardens with vegetation that does not require as much water. Although lots of villa owners are willing to pay bi-monthly water bills of € 2000+ to keep their lawns green and lush in the summer, the Algarve could never afford to sustain artificial landscapes in such large scale.

Personally, I am happy to let my little patch of lawn go grey in the summer, it will always grow back in fall. Oleanders and palmtrees require next to no water.

golf courses sufficient??they get there water the same places everyone else does..underground or from the tap....underground is a shared resource..tap water comes from resevours created by raiinfall which all falls on us.

no one has an exclusivity of water.

I was being frivolous in what could turn out to be quite a serious situation.
Water..the source of life..that not one of us can live without.
Hope you get the necessary rainfall for Algarve..but only at night

99% OF all golf courses have there own water supplies from there own boreholes, and lets also remember the the income from the Algarve golf courses is what keeps alot of nationals like my self in business and employed.

That sounds good untill you stop and think that no matter who's borehole it is, the water still comes from the common underground water supply.

well as cowboy says...alll underground water is shared..not some "golfcourses property"...i wonder what will happen if rationing does happen and people paas by some golf course with water being sprayed everywhere...i think there would be some adverse reation.

Lets face it - wether you like 'em or hate 'em, without golfcourses the Algarve would have less revenue, less jobs and lower land values. However, I do think we have had enough built, and some of the courses built over the last few years we could have done without.

and now the headline in this weeks news says it all....the minister is to be questioned about water use and golf courses.....excellent news
