Restaurant Guide
I am aware that there are some excellent resources for Carvoeiro area with regard to google map listings of restaurants. For some time I have been considering the idea of trying to tackle a restaurant guide that lists all restaurants in the whole of the Algarve which could well be an ' I wish I hadn't started it' type project but nevertheless I am determined !
I would be grateful for any suggestions that range from don't bother to - it must have reviews and menus
What is needed to make this a useful thing that will get some use rather than an just an interesting IT challenge for me ?
Would the people that worked so hard on setting up and checking the data of the original one be interested in being in touch ?
Any info, guidance comments or suggestions appreciated - thanks in anticipation

What will this guide contain if not reviews (and menus) ?
Check out EatAlgarve which is a Restarant Guide created by the owner fo this website.
Also ask yourself why EatAlgarve has not succeeded ?
Technicaly its not hard and I'm sure of great benefit.
I presume you have a huge advertising budget to ensure that you get known and used.
Something around €20,000 to begin with would probably suffice.
Then of course you need to constantly be referred to and thus constantly keep your profile on the Web very high.
Again, I wonder how you're planning on monetising the site to conver the ongoing advertising costs.
What is the competition?
Obviosuly FreeMaps for each area.
Local magazines like Inside do a great job.
Others ?
Its a big undertaking that needs a lot of follow up once the site is created.

Apart from the restaurant guides available through this forum Tripadvisor does a pretty good job covering restaurants in the Algarve.
The biggest complaint I have against restaurant guides for the Algarve is that the churn rate of ownership and chefs every year is so high that I feel reviews from previous years are often meaningless. Even a guide updated annually would be of limited value if it's based on last year's feedback.

If we do this then it will be well funded by local, national and international sponsors and supported by the regional tourist authority - from a user point of view it will function on PC's, laptops, tablets and phones and enables everyone to find all places easily, it will allow GPS equipped devices (smart phone, android tablet, iPad for example) to direct their owners to the door. We already have the initial restaurant data so that part is done.
The idea is that tourist related businesses and local community sites will be able to request a feed of the restaurant data for their area and the more sites that use/promote that data the more chance we have of keeping all the information current
I believe EatAlgarve was certainly along the right lines, was one of the first to see a requirement and had the right concept, I do however see some lessons that can be learned from the implementation.
Technically it's a small challenge to combine everything needed to do the job really properly and make it look appealing - I don't know if it is of great benefit to end users yet hence the question to you all
The proposed site will link with trip advisor and it has their support. It will also have some of their review information but it will be more accurate, more up to date. map based and cover a lot more Algarve restaurants than trip advisor currently does.
For certain we are going to depend on regular feedback from end users, restaurant owners will be able to log-in and change their own info (but not their reviews) all updated info would appear on the site instantly + on all sites sharing the data.
