exactly...what nonsense to say tolls are for anti terriorism,..or for the environment...they are there simply to raise cash for the govt....as for being put off by tolls..i am...when i consider how much it costs not just in petrol but in tolls (30 euros return) ..I say its too expensive....its cheaper to go to Seville.
in fact one local firm bringing in IKEA stuff now go to Seville..the stuff is cheaper and there are no tolls to Seville.....once again Spain wins!!!

Are you sure about 30euros? It costs, I think, 11 from Lisbon to junction 12 which is where we turn off, plus a bit for the bridge.
I don't mind the tolls at all actually. It's much quicker and easier, plenty of places to eat. As someone pointed out, the excellent French motorways are all tolled. I thought they were quite expensive, but well worth it.
I can't think a few euros to drive up the road is going to be the death of tourism, it's only the price of a few icecreams.

If you want a Via Verde just ask for the form at the next Brisa toll booth you stop at, fill it out and mail it in. The tolls are debited automatically from your bank account and you get a monthly sheet with all journeys and their respective costs. The toll costs are identical to the tolls charged at the normal payment booths - the sole advantage is not having to wait in line - which is a moot point if you have to stand in traffic for 1 hour before you reach the "beginning" of the Via Verde route, usually only a few hundred meters before the tool booths.Aardvark wrote:At the moment I pay each time I use the IP1.Do any board members use the via verde pass. If so how was it obtained and how are costs calculated?
Thanks

Careful peter - remember we both got our wrists seriously slapped over the offshore issue and the rights and wrongs of tax "avoidance" recently.
It seems that bleating about tax is something that happens everywhere (as do apparently absurd tax policies - but then thats what governments do everywhere) no one ever likes to pay but tax is a fact of life and as I have posted before, any revenue not raised from one source has to come from another or we have reduced services which we will than also bleat about.

goverments are the biggest wasters of tax money ....which come from their citizens.....the road in question has been already paid for....any toll is a tax not for the road but for other reasons.
the govt here put a tax on the offshore property market...most agents now tell me the real estate market is almost dead....result the govt doesnt get the taxes it wants.
the govt here adjusted the tax on 4 wheel drive cars...result they killed the market....in fact as one newpaper said..if they had just left the tax as it was they would still be receiving tax revenue..but they didnt...so now they have to look for another source...aaahhh--put a toll on the algarve road....when tourists are put off from coming and business is down and taxes suffer as well then there will be another search for the new "revenue earner"
i suggest a tax on registered forum users...make em squeell...thatl teach em

Ooh yes.
Imagine the scene:-
Holidayperson:- So if you go to Portugal you will have yummy food, fabulous beaches, and the Portuguese are very friendly.
PotentialHolidaymaker:- Sounds good to me
Holidayperson: But you have to pay 8euros to drive down the motorway.
PotentialHolidaymaker:- B*gger that then. I'll spend more going to a mosquito infested swamp called Florida and spend a fantastic amount of dosh looking at someone dressed up as mickey mouse.
I can see it is bad for people who live in the Algarve, but not those on holiday.
