I'm not worried about losing the TV Channels. I'm saving all the posts on the subject and I'll read them when in in cvo. I won't have time for TV :)

More chatter that the SKY signal will also go for us in the south in the not too distant future, so a good internet connection is of even more importance as demand from Expats and others will increase.

The remaining mainstream UK channels have gone.
We are left with SKY news and a host of shopping channels that will have re runs of old series and films later in the day.

Invest in a 2 € bottle of wine and sit and enjoy a good laugh at old films and series we once thought good. :D
When summer has gone ( why watch tv on a summer evening ) and the dust has settled then think about the alternatives.

Beware of the set top box/IPTV systems - it is illegal to transmit programs without the Rights to broadcast. A company in Spain has just been taken to court and fined a massive amount. All the customers lost their money (set up fees and advance monthly fees).

I read about a company in Portugal being forced to close (?) but reopened a few day later and demanded more money from the existing clients to reconnect (good scam!)

There is a Legal system from the UK more info soon.

I think this is the chap who was moving here full time & asking for information about Freemasons, seems perfectly reasonable to me.

Furthermore, having googled the topic it seems that he is right, some transmissions are illegal !

One of the obvious failings of Internet forums is the inability to express emotions normally done through intonation & body language. I have misinterpreted responses in the past & whilst I think EMM is a bit "trigger happy" I'm sure there is no malice intended. Please continue to contribute, without contributors the forum ceases to exist & we will lose a valuable & generally impartial source of local information.

Approaching this from a slightly different angle........................

I wonder if SKY have any idea as to how many of their clients are actually ex-pats who are accessing their service by technically illegal means??

I have heard it suggested that something in the region of 30% of SKY's subscribers are expats who have bought SKY boxes and have simply taken them abroad, paying a monthly subscription via a UK bank account.

It is further suggested that if a workable solution to the problem cannot be found, SKY will find itself hit by a sudden flood of cancellations.

The people up in Livingston arent stupid, whilst publicly saying how they will cancel any illegal accounts they discover, they have happily accepted the significant revenue stream that this so called illegal business has generated, and they have done so for years!

When I worked for SKY, at least 2 of my managers had villas in Spain, and both of them openly admitted to operating their SKY accounts abroad.

SO....what do SKY do? Sit back and have a significant number of long standing accounts to be cancelled? Or find a work around?

The problem that SKY , and the other UK broadcasters have for that matter, have is that legally their broadcasting licence does not allow them to broadcast to subscribers outside of the UK.

The question is....can the blindeye be shut again???

Valid point Bruce. I've been reading about a gadget called a "sling box" which if connected to your UK Sky receiver can transmit the signal to your home in Portugal without them knowing.

Now as I'm a fine, upstanding legal sort of chap it wouldn't interest me - but thought you should know
