the rubbish that is said....
watching channel 4 the other day about a couple wanting to compare buying a property in uk with a purchase (in this case) in the Alentejo..the programme was filmed in early spring...the buyer said "he was impressed how lush and green it all was" ...there was no correction. go there now and you will see how dry and brown it all is!!
the programme never mentioned the intense heat with no coastal breeze to cool things down..or perhaps explain the reason why the area has such a high sucide rate?
one wonders why these programmes never say things as they are...perhaps of course the researcher is fed rubbbish from the real estate people behind the scenes

Which programme was that?
I must say I didn't know about the suicide rate. It is rather high http://www.med.uio.no/iasp/jul2002/5.html
It seems much the same rate as Belgium.
To be honest it's not the sort of thing you mention in a house programme, and I've not noticed a lot of locals dangling from trees, so it's not a biggy on the house purchase decision front.
The Alentejo is an awfully big area, the bit we bought doesn't seem hotter than the Algarve. It is cooler on the beach, but that effect is only noticed very close to the beach, I assume the Algarve is much the same.
We bought our house after watching 'I want that house' about a place near Odemira. And yes it was lush and green when we saw it, and very beautiful too with masses of wild flowers. It does crisp up a bit in the summer, but still quite lovely.

I watched the program and compared to what was on offer in Cornwall the properties were very good value in Alentejo area. It looked really lovely. I was thinking..god if its lush and green..must mean they get a lot of rain, which I want to escape. Still, I suppose if you get a long hot dry summer you don't mind some rain.
Look out Alentejo for the mass exodus of suicidal Brits, from the UK.
Have you noticed the way the TV presenters ask such stupid questions, then nod their heads as if willing the people to give a positive response.
the classic the other day was" this house has a burglar alarm, but its not linked to the police station....is this something you might want to do?"
Derrr....was that girl totally thick or what? I bet the owners of that property were well pleased they anounced that on national TV.
Have you seen the programme "get a new life" the family have 2 weeks to pack up their life and move to their chosen country. I watched in sheer disbelief as people want to move ie to France to live and work. Never visited the country and could not speak the language.......errrr
What research, if any, do these people do prior to making such a life changing decision, which involves not only themselves but also their children.
Perhaps that is the purpose of the program to make them look total nerds and that is the entertainment....or give the relocators something to do.
However, some like the couple who moved to Canada I was really pleased it worked out for them. It's nice when people realsie their dreams.

As there is often just the one camera the two sides of the conversation are recorded separately. The nodding looks weird because it was recorded in isolation.

Do you live there or just use as holiday home?
We never looked at that region of Portugal, purely because we wanted to be near the sea and when we considered our options we are not really that adventurous. I can imagine renovating a house if you do not speak the language adequately must be quite a challenge not to mention a lot of hard work. It has been bad enough just having one built and we are still at the early stages.
We have bought a house in the western algarve near Alzejur. We are a couple of mins from the natural beaches and away from the main tourists haunts. There are not that many Brits and English is not that widely spoken in the local shops etc. It is in a natural conservation area.....no high rise or mass building.
Yes, it has its draw backs but what is idylic to some but be someone elses nightmare. Still our plot is big over 1000m2 but not to big and there are other villas around, but not to close. Its a good starting point until we can speak the language and are more adventurous
I would have liked a rural property..like yours but then did not want to be isolated. Have you finished renovating?
Re the presenters...how do you know they record separately...please say you are not one of them...on a groveling note. I dont dislike all of them.
Or even worse you were not one of the people featured on the program buying a property?

I used to work at redifon in crawley on flight simulators and we had regular visits from tv crews for programmes like tomorrows world. We had to be on hand in case the sim broke, so watched the process.
If you go up the road from Alzejur to Odemira and turn right for about 20mins to Reliquias, we are near there. The area is lovely.
We've had a hell of a job finding a builder, or at least Karin has. She's brilliant. Finally, she found a german guy called Thomas. He's very good, showed us around a couple of houses that have been finished, complete with owners who thought he was excellent, and a couple in progress. We are currently waiting for planning permission and then Thomas can get the roof done so he can start work on the inside in the rain. The house is tipa (mud), so it's important to get someone who is used to working with it.
Very few people in the area speak English, but they are all terribly friendly and things work out.
It's not actually that far from the west coast, and there are some cracking beaches.
It's not actually too isolated. The house is in a little valley called Franciscos which has maybe 10 houses, one of them lived in. Since we bought ours quite a few have been sold to English people, all rebuilds. Our house is maybe 1/2 km from a tarmac road that is perhaps 10km from Reliquias, so it's quite accessable.
I've got loads of photos, I'll see about slinging some up on the web asap. Needs to fit in round work.

Well Peter, you can tell my Geography is totally, cr. err useless. Did not realise like us you were on the western side, totally lost the plot and thought you were in the Alentejo area.
We have not ventured much past Rogil as yet and the beaches just up from there. Once we move in will need to explore the area more.
I would love to see some pictures when you have a moment. Its good you have found someone to do the renovations, especially if he comes highly recommended.

The alentejo starts at Odeceixe. Nice place, massive beach, good restaurant in the town which I can't remember the name of at all. In a road that leads to the little square, very tall ceiling. Really nice pork with peppercorns.
