Re: A22 Tolls
I can confirm that the last gantry westbound is between junctions 3 (Mexilhoeira) & 2 (Odiaxere). The end of the A22 is junction 0.joeysoap wrote:... If you stick on the 125 (going west) as far as Odiaxere then take the turn to the A22 , join the A22 and turn West towards Vila do Bispo, are you 'past' the last tolling gantry? I think the A22 (for the little bit thats left of it) is toll free from the last junction until the motorway ends. ...
At risk of encouraging mass civil disobedience, if the transponder is removed from the car the toll charges will accrue to the registration number as before the transponders were fitted. You can then go to the usual payment locations and pay the actual tolls plus 0,26€ + IVA per journey. Alternatively, if you have one, you can substitute your personal pre-paid transponder for the hire car's transponder, to avoid the surcharge. Failure to pay will incur the wrath of your rental car supplier, when they get fined for non-payment.joeysoap wrote:... I am thinking of taking a spin up the west coast later this week and don't really want to waste €20 on tolls (thats the minimum TR charge if you use the tolls at all). I find the 125 is fine at this time of year but don't really want to go through Lagos either on this occasion. ...
Incidentally there is a new CTT app available which amongst other things can monitor the tolls due against a list of car registration numbers.

Re: A22 Tolls
Thank you HR, that's exactly what I was hoping for. So join at junction 1 and head for junction 0
and it's toll free.
I used the motorway in August/Sept mostly to avoid the hassle of driving in heavy traffic but outside of those months I find the 125 ok. I did notice the reduction in charges on my return journey to the airport in Sept. TR charge a deposit of €20 for motorway use and to be fair refund it straight away at the airport on return of the car. (even 1 toll and you get no refund)
I wont be going near the transponder. Not worth the bother.

You would actually join at junction 2, heading for junction 0. Make sure you go through Odiaxere (heading west) before heading north to the motorway.joeysoap wrote:Thank you HR, that's exactly what I was hoping for. So join at junction 1 and head for junction 0and it's toll free. ...
Re: A22 Tolls
Thanks HR for the exellent advice. Didn't actually make the trip this time as the weather was so unexpectedly good during our stay that driving for 2 hours to Vila Nova would have seemed a waste of good sunshine. Then is rained so no point in driving anywhere. Maybe April..... or June.......
was over by Monte Clerigo and Aljizur 2 years ago and it is lovely over there, still in the Algarve but different if you know what I mean.

Re: A22 Tolls
Has anybody received a fine for not paying the tolls over the past few years?
It would be interesting to know any were sent out.

Can now be paid at the Intermarche paper shop - which, unlike the post offices, is open 7 days a week. (Maybe this was always possible and I just didn't know about it?)
Makes things a bit easier for those of us who don't mind paying the tolls but just want an easy way to do it.
Still doesn't solve the problem of the return journey to the airport for those, like us, who don't want to drive through the endless traffic lights etc on the N125.
Maybe one day they will also make it possible to pay the tolls online. Either that, or every hire car will have to have a transponder in it.
