external wifi web cam

Post by Sheila »

I want to set up an outside web cam so I can see the view from our house when away but I've no idea what sort or where I might get one from in Portugal. It has to be outside because the shutters will be down and wifi so it will connect to the router inside.
Any ideas or experience?

Help me understand what you are trying to achieve. Assuming you get a camera installed and working - what happens when you are sitting in the UK and access your camera through the power of the technology - you see somebody/image around the outside of your property - what happens next :?

Why does it need to be wifi?

Bear in mind you're going to need to have wires coming from the camera to back indoors to keep it powered!

I've arranged for my builder to install an external power socket. :-)

Its not so much for security...I just want to admire the amazing view and the weather and dream about being back there.

Thanks for this but there are so many to choose from I was hoping for a personal recommendation from someone with one installed and working.

Since you've got a power socket, you could use powerline adapters to connect to your router and therefore could use a wired IP camera instead of wireless.

That's true. If I use a 2 way adapter as I only have one socket. Are wired ones better than wifi?

I don't know! I'm just trying to be helpful by giving you even more choices. :)

You can get pass-through powerline adapters such as http://www.amazon.es/TP-LINK-TL-PA2010P ... ds=TP-Link.

We have to use powerline adapters anyway due to the layout and construction of our property. We end up with a more reliable connection than with weak WiFi signals.
