Results of a recent survey in Good Housekeeping (wife's copy!) reported that the best for a family of four flying to Malaga with 2 checked luggage and reserved seats, 1st week June, was:-

BA - food and drink included, 23kg baggage each and a total cost of £879 - High satisfaction and best overall
Easyjet - no free food or drink, extra for bags (£33 FOR EACH 20KG) Price £751 - Low satisfaction, but the cheapest
THOMAS COOK - no free food or drink, £19 per 20kg) Price £796 - Average service
RYANAIR - no food etc, £25 for 15kg bag Price £901 - worst for customer service
FLYBE No food etc bags do cost but complicated charging - Price £1305 - average service
JET2 No food etc, £7.99 for 22kg Price £1002 - above average service
Thomson Airways - No food etc £25-40 per 20kg bag - Price £1447 Average service and Most expensive
Monarch - No food etc, £13-20 per 20kg - Price 943 - above average service

The other factor was legroom availability Best BA 31-34inch,
Thomas Cook, Ryanair, Jet2 30ins
EasyJet, Flybe 29ins
Thomson, Monarch 28ins (min size)

Interesting program on BBC few nights about about Ryanair and EasyJet and how they operate. Michael O'Leary stated that in the future there could be completely 'free' flights with only add ons to pay for. Free my a**e. Ryanair fares along with all other fares are creeping upwards all the time. Still cheap and they do keep the 'traditional' carriers like BA and Aer Lingus in check. Interesting too how when they informed Finches they would no longer be serving free orange juice (in the early days of the airline), Finches gave them the juice free in order to gain a profile etc. And Ryanair, seeing the opportunity, actually CHARGED Finches for providing the FREE orange juice.

EasyJet have placed an order for 135 new Airbus aircraft (with a possible further 100) , Ryanair have just placed an order for 175 new aircraft with Boeing. Program also stated that with few exceptions they don't actually compete with each other.

There was an interesting quote from the lady who is Ryanair's Director of Services on that programme. She said that O'Leary only says these things for effect but she wished that sometimes he'd keep his trap shut. She's the one who has to handle the flack.

Like them or not wwe would all be paying through the nose for flights without him and EJ.
There would only be a package tour market to the Med with just those who could afford it using BA etc.

Ouyr first holiday to Portugal was during the height of the package tour boom, it only became an attractive destination when the " low cost airlines " moved in.
But for them we would not have given PT a second thought,

say what we like about Ryanair he does get bums on seats. even if they are not very comfortable seats. I don't particularly like them but a deal is a deal.....

I have to say that I don't have too many problems with Ryanair.
You know fine well what is what with them, but I find them great because of that.
I often fly on a Friday night after work and go home on a Tuesday night and do so for about a £100, give or take depending on the time of year.
I once had a flight home for 3 euros + 6 euros for my debit card.
I don't care what anyone says --- that is a good deal.

Surprised EJ has low satisfaction as I use them all the time and overall the flights have been time, newish planes, not bad flight times and best of are the cheapest fir me with no luggage flying from Gatwick. Hubby also uses EJ and Ryanair for business, but mainly EJ.

We use Ryanair most times as they are the cheapest and usually good times. Its a no frills job and one cant really complain when compared to the rest. Apart from the luxury prices for food and drink (can €8.50 for a G&T really be justified??) the main gripe with them is the boarding at FAO. U Start in a long Q for 40 mins, then go down stairs and Q for another 10mins, then into the lounge and Q for an unknown time - can be mins or nearly an hr - then finally out onto the tarmac and Q again for 10mins until you board. It's very odd.
