I think EMM is getting confused between sites which sell VPN services, and websites which sell rebroadcast streams of TV stations.

For a site to sell anyone overseas a re broadcast service they have to have VPN software which hides the location of their clients.
Which is one of the issues being raised by the orginal broadcasters .

That is not correct at all.

Read some of the adverts from Expat Shield, Expats TV, British expats etc etc and others like them.

That part is not correct. Some sites rebroadcasting tv are doing so by capturing the signal at one end, then rebroadcasting it themselves and making it available to anyone (or rather anyone who pays their fee), not just people in the UK. This has zero to do with VPN services. You would be able to log in to them from your regular Portuguese internet connection with no problems at all.

Some services like expatshield are selling a VPN service - this is perfectly legal and there is absolutely nothing BBC, SKY or anyone else can do about it. At best, the tv stations could insist their logos/brands weren't used in tv ads or websites. But that won't matter... 5 minutes of Googling will tell anyone abroad that they need a VPN to watch tv, and they can then go find one of the perfectly legitimate websites offering this, and pay.

The lawyers are having a fied day , BBC/ITV etc are under international treaty restricted to broadcasting their main channels to the UK.
To receive these on the internet you have to create a false location which is legally dubious like giving anyone a false address
Phrases like, hide, mask etc are used in these companies adverts.
One of the legal arguements appears to be that these sites have no legal rights to SELL access to these TV channels.
International broadcast laws were were written long before the internet was ever thought about, Laws and international agreements will change to reflect this.

I think that one day we will end up with an internationally legal internet TV equivalent of I Tunes where we pay for what we watch any where we are in the world with the broadcasters receiving their share of the revenue.

Can we have some links to the news stories where the solicitors are taking action against people then please.

This is simply not correct at all. There is nothing legally dubious about using a UK ip address when you are outside of the UK. Trying to steal tv broadcasts is just one of hundreds of reasons people would need to do this.

EMM wrote: One of the legal arguements appears to be that these sites have no legal rights to SELL access to these TV channels.
They are not selling access to tv channels. They are selling access to UK ip addresses. Customers then misuse this service. This would be like the online equivalent of blaming B&Q for selling a crowbar to a burglar...

Perhaps, but history tells us we will also have a black economy of people not wanting to pay, and finding ways around it. People were pirating music tapes, then cd's, then dvd's, then bluerays. Online we had newsgroups, torrents, ftp sites, misuse of VPN, etc etc etc.

Well EMM, I've asked & I've asked and you've come up with nothing; my own research endorses Octopus's point that I think you are confusing VPN's with premium programme rebroadcasting and so I'm declaring your assertion that Sky & ITV are suing VPN companies as having come from The Gospel According to EMM, not based on fact. (I will of course withdraw that if you present something credible to back up what you've said).

As to these lawyers having field days, I'm going with the same call; BBC iplayer and ITVplayer are, as you know, freely available to watch in the UK and as such are available to watch abroad for those folk who subscribe to a legal VPN based in the host country, in this case, the UK.

I think you have a point about rebroadcasting of premium channel content, but this is different and off topic to the one the OP introduced.

So, to help the OP and those interested, it's perfectly fair to say that watching BBC & ITV on iplayer via a VPN is a great idea, and if the download speed is a bit slow then simply download what you want overnight or something & then you have 30 days to watch it before it disappears.

I think LB's call is another great one, download in the UK before you come over, put it all on a stick & plug it into your telly. Get a nice piri piri takeaway, a glass of vino, feet up & enjoy, happy days 8)

We can debate the legal and moral arguements until the end of time but eventually it will be the economic ones that win.
The major program makers and broadcasters will do all they can to limit/restrict access to their product other than through official routes as has to a degree been done with music.
They will have to do this or otherwise how will they be able to sell their product to the various national broadcasters.
Why should they buy when their home population can get it for free or virtually nothing via the internet.
Capitalism will prevail as it always does.

I for one will not be paying any of these sites, VPN, proxy IPTV, rebroadcasters call them what you will until this market stabilises and I am satisfied as to their legaility and that I will be getting what I am paying for.

Sorry Expats TV, UK TV, Filmon, Catchup TV etc etc you can find some other mug to sell to.

As I keep saying Just Google Internet TV copywrite. there have been cases going through in the UK and the US . There has I believe even been a ruling in the ECJ.

Yes you keep saying it, but since at least two of us have had a look and not been able to find anything, how about you give us a link to a tv station taking action against a VPN provider?

NBC, CBS, ITV, Sky's parent commpany just to name a few.
Obviously my search engines are better.???
All the legal arguements do is make lawyers richer it will be the economic ones that will win through in the end.

We keep asking you for a link to an article. If you've read the articles, then please post the actual web address of them. I'd like to read them and happy to comment on them but I can't do this unless I can see them in the first place...

Do as I do look for them that way you will not get just pre selected articles. They are many from sites with an obvious vested interest to newspaper articles etc.

Here is a link. If you search for rebroadcast on The Register you will find other articles. Some of the stories have links out to court judgements.
