I found that BBC IPlayer didn't work in Portugal on my Ipad. It said that it wasn't available outside the UK.

It is not which is why you need a proxy IP address ( VPN ) which hides your location.

There will be a technology battle between the broadcasters like the BBC and those who want to charge you for hiding your location or who make ther revenue from advertisers on their sites.

hi Dennis,

VPN's are perfectly legitimate & quite legal & used a lot

the technology was developed for companies that had offices in multiple countries; they built a secure network, based normally at head office, and connected the overseas offices so that all were on the same (secure) network, much like networks in companies here or even households on their own LAN's (local area networks')
the net effect being that even if you're in say, Switzerland, when you log on you do so the home server in say, London. And the by product is that as your server is in London, UK you're then able to log onto things like BBC iplayer etc.

this has all now been taken to a commercial level where people set up international VPN's and invite you to subscribe; so if you like Corrie & Eastenders it makes sense to register with a UK based VPN, it's a much bigger business in the US (isn't everything?? :-) ) so folks around the world can watch home based TV.

or, as LB said, you download stuff whilst in UK & put it on a stick to bring with you, wife & I did that & watched the excellent 'Homeland' series when we were last over 8)

Sky TV parent company is taking the rebroadcasters of their programs to court in the US for copywrite infringement and in the UK courts the ITV companies are trying to block others who broadcast in Europe.
The issue is that they are not paying for the rights hence the changes that are likely to happen in years to come.
Use them while you can but do no sign up to any subscriptions.

Good point well said Sunman. Personnally I'm not interested in catching up with UK tv soap operas. I use my VPN to ensure that I can get uncensored access to news feeds and web-based communications that many paranoid governments try to block. I have to confess my only real copyright indulgence is using it to listen to the BBC Radio 5 Live cricket commentary! With the current NZ tour and back-to-back ashes series coming up my $70 is well spent I think!

do you have any knowledge that ITV & Sky are suing to have some VPN's shut down? or is this from the Gospel of EMM?

If you have, I'd like to send the links to my friends in Asia

There are pages and pages on this subject on the internet some quoting the case numbers and judgements in the courts.
These companies believe that they do not have to pay royalties but are happy to charge subscriptions and take advertising income.
Of course whne they **** up it will be the poor subsciber who loses out.

We seem to live in a world where far too many want everything for nothing.

If you have an Apple Mac then use a program called Iplayer Automator it works in Holland fine so should be ok in Portugal. It loads the TV programs into Itunes. If you have a wifi network and an apple TV box then its as easy as ABC !! Its good for ITV and BBC but has a few hiccups with C4.

" copywrite "

What started my looking into this was the number adds on sites and in the expat press that offered an alternative to the loss of Sat TV.
Many of them border on the fraudulent with some of their statements and lack of information.
Further research revealed that there is now this conflict between the broadcasters and this growing industry that has reached the courts in the US and Europe.
The last thing I wanted to do was to sign up to or buy equipment for a service that just does not work if your internet connection is not good enough or where you could lose the very channels you want to watch because the BBC/ITV etc have manage to restrict the re transmission of their progs .

Eventually this will all be resolved licensed internet TV through subscription will be available to anyone who wants to pay.
