Planned retirement in Carvoeiro.

Post by Daddio »

Hi all, I have had a villa in Sesmarias for 10 years now and although I know the areas well going back and forth to England I have never had the opportunity to explore if there are in groups or Societies where a 61 year old could make some friends. I have a long term plan to wind things down in the UK ( possibly 1 year) then spend most of my time in Carvoeiro. I like Golf but I fear a regular game might be to expensive if charged tourist rates, I also like walking and talking in general.
I would really appreciate any advice for a single 61 year old who is petrified of being bored in retirement. Thanks in advance.

Well Daddio, well done on your early retirement plans, for Golf in the Carvoeiro area you should contact Mungoes Golf Society who enjoy preferential rates at local courses http://mungos.algarve-golf.co.uk/ this website has got lots of info on them although I don’t think its exactly upto date, but all you need to get started is available on it. There are about two hundred rambler groups on this forum alone, (at least it seems like it) where I am sure you will be made very welcome. Good Luck.

Hi Daddio I went to Mungos golf society when I was over in Carvoeiro earlier in the year. They were a lovely bunch of people who made me feel more than welcome. We all walked away with a bottle of vino when we finished our game which was an added bonus. Now that you are checking in with this forum, you won't be long connecting with people when you settle over there. We met our lovely Scottish neighbours through it. So the very best of luck when you make the move. :D

Hey Daddio,

If you have a place in Sesmarias then Rosas is the place to be if you want a bit of company and a few hours of idle chit chat.
As for golf, I have no ideas other than Mungos.

For golf, also see

Golfing for Greys was started by some locals, and I believe is still run locally.

If a short course takes your fancy, then Val de Milho might appeal to you http://valedemilhogolf.com/ We had Xmas lunch with a bunch of members and they were great fun. I don't think it's that expensive.

Hashing - what's that - something along the lines of cakes with a certain mellowing additive.

LICY, you'll have to ask Gaynor about those cakes, "space cakes" from a nice little bakery in Amsterdam.

Nice to retire to a pleasant climate, just making a list of all the things I'd miss, mostly food items.

We want to retire to spend winter months in CVO within the next 10 years, so better get those mortgages paid off and save, save, save. :D

You have to remember I am from the South. On top of that if it's slang used by an older generation than mine it's no wonder. I am learning the new words such as AVIT, LMFAO, LOL and the like. It's damn hard being my age.     So pray tell what is hashing or is it too embarrassing?
