where can we go this eve for chicken piri piri??

Post by kelly »

Hi All

Its my families last night in Carvoeiro tonight so we want to go out for chicken piri piri. We normally go Tia Ilda but we have been told their upstairs grill area isnt open for the season yet. Can anyone suggest any good restaurants for chicken piri piri locally please?

Ta

Tai Ilda is open we had chicken piri piri there just last Tuesday upstairs at around 6.30 p.m. - yep it was a bit chilly but the chicken as good as ever!
Have a good last eve - we have only been back one day and are planning our next visit.

Agreed tricky. O Casario in Lagoa is excellent and very reasonably priced. Go steady with the pir piri oil though, really hot!

The last post leads me to ask " what is real chicken Piri Piri " ??

Is it a whole chicken splt open an marinated for a few hours in what ever the local Piri Piri mix is. Cooked on a BBQ , basted with the marinade, served piping hot chopped up into unrecognizable pieces with salad an loads of chips. ( That how we like it and how I do mine ).
A container of your own Piri Piri oil mix to top up with if needed. ( olive oil, chili peppers, garlic, herbs , some add brandy or even whisky to extend its shelf life ).
Or is it a grilled pce of chicken, or chicken breast lacking any piri piri flavour with a bottle of a proprietory Chili oil on the table.
Sadly this is all too often what you get in many of the tourist focused places, fortunatley we have yet to face this so called version locally.

Have to say that without a shadow of a doubt, the chicken piri piri takeway on the in road is great if you want to eat at home. They had an offer on, in Feb when we were there, 20 euros for two chickens, chips for 4 and bottle of wine... they do specials on certain days, like suckling pig and fresh bread and always have a lot of salads on offer.
closed sat.

EMM. You clearly have not been to O Casario as you would not make such comments if you had. Please go to try it then post what you think. Piri piri can be many things to many people and all restaurants have a different take. Here you will find more locals than tourists. Looking at your post the presentation here should be exactly to your liking. Sit outside if it's warm enough and watch the preparation on the BBQ, no grill in sight.

I have been to Caserao and as you say the Chili oil is on the hot side, I can recommend it for families they went out of their way to cook something special for a very picky 9 year old.. The basic chicken dish was not as hot as we like it but that is down to taste. I agree no comparison to some that is served up as Piri Piri.
One of the best we have had was in the late lamented O Cais in Silves when it was run by an eccentric Portuguese .
We have also been to a place in Algoz, which was very good. looks like a shopfront Tardis like, huge inside , locals queueing at 7.00pm to get a table.

Thanks. Must try that one in Algoz, and some in Guia are supposed to be good. I am experimenting with my own piri piri oil at home in the UK and am growing piri piri chillies from seed extracted from pods brought back from Portugal. No reason why we should not get a good crop under glass. Let's hope, but time will tell.

The BEST Piri Piri???

One of the best is a specialist Pirti piri restaurtant in Guia called RAMEIREZ

Go as far as the Guia roundabout....what we call the Cliff Richard roundabout. Turn right into Guia, then the first left.
One hundred metres, park on the waste land.
Carry on up the cobbled street another 100 metres and find a 3 story restaurant with a huge cockerel sign. This is Ramerirez.

You wont be disappointed

(We were first taken there by Tricky....must be good!! :D )

I agree that Rameriz is the best Piri Piri if you want a 10 minute drive, would I have taken you anywhere less than perfect Bruce? :D
Still say the take away is the best locally
