I haven't tried transfering from England, but i do internet transfers from here to Europe and the States, to bank accounts there, and it is easy.Obviously you do need to have Swift Codes and Sorting / Routing codes.Nomally in USA,is a pain to get the SWIFT CODES from there , as they normally don't include it in their banking details- i actually had to get it myself trough the net.
I must say that Millennium bank ( BCP group ), seems to have all the facilities and cheaper rates for their services.
Ihope this will help a bit to some CVO Members.

Barclays must be an exception then. Natwest won't let you do transfers to foreign accounts either. We go through a broker.

We also set up an account with Millennium in Lagoa and it was easy. They spoke good English too.

Thanks for the advice Digger. I was asking a similar question in the Property Owners forum, except my main need was for an on-line Portugese bank account that I could control when in the UK. To transfer funds to my lawyer in CVO I have used a foreign exchange broker in the UK, and have found exchange rates much better than my UK bank could offer.

I also Bank with Barclays and transfer directly to any bank / Lawyer etc etc by internet banking....from UK....have done for couple of years now...but I agree with previous post...its very expensive.

Hi all

We bank with BES (Banco Espirito Santo) in Lagoa, who have been great for two years, but have been disappointing in our recent application for a mortgage.

We are now working with BBVA in Portimaso who are extemely efficien and professional, and make BES look a little sleepy.

Also in Carvoeiro, Credito Predial, seem very good as we have approached them about a mortgage too. It FD in the UK, and have our account set up so that we can transfer to Our account herer in Portugal over the internet. It costs £20 to make a transfer, but their exchange rates hav always been very competitive, and we tend to do a few thousand at a time, so the £20 is not an issue.

Inspired by Guest's insistance that he can transfer funds through a UK Barclays internet account, I e-mailed them on the basis that we would open an account for this purpose, the reply was - "Thank you for your e-mail dated Wednesday, 29 September 2004 22:41:15. Unfortunately, we do not currently offer the facility to transfer your funds overseas using the Online Banking service..." We bank with HSBC in the UK and Caixa in Portugal, and use both internet services for most things, except transfers. HSBC say they will probably be introducing this service eventually. What is Guest's secret?

Guest is right now in Worthing.......I have just xferred via internet Barclays to Spain for car .........I have no idea why it seems Im the only one that can do this........Im going to pop into Barclays whilst Im here and find out whats going on........Standby...

Sorry for the delay........went to Barclays in Worthing but the line was so long (to see an advisor) I gave up..actually worse than Algarve Banks.....
...anyway since then called my Branch and they confirmed that they support internet banking etc etc........

By the way I also have internet banking with Nationwide and have xferred many times between accounts but cant recall if I have ever carried out a transfer overseas.

Finally........'Is this the clue I wonder'.......I have an OFF Shore Barclays account and it was through this OFF Shore account that I first set up my internet Banking facility........however I use the same internet facility to transfer direct from my ON Shore account .......to not only my bank account here but I pay bills direct from UK to the Algarve as well....Maybe this is the trick...I'm not sure...so I suggest if your Bank wont set this up ..open an Off Shore account with Barclays (Only takes a few mins)...and I assure you ..........You can transfer anywhere in the world FRom your ON Shore Bank..

Many many thanks for the efforts. I think you may have found the solution that most of us missed with simple UK based on-line banking services, which definitely do not offer international transfers.

With the hints in your latest posting, I hunted thru the Barclays website (its vast and non trivial) and found this page:
