TOLL FINES
I hired a car last April in Faro and travelled around using the motorway.
The tolls were not explained and it was only on the next trip I learnt about the options.
Then yesterday my wife and I both received letters from AT asking for 73 Euros.
Its all in Portugese so have no clue what it says.
Has anyone had one too/can explain my options.
If I don't pay, what happens?

Re: TOLL FINES
Sorry to hear that Congerman. Assume they got your address from the hire company, as its from AT did they manage to associate with your NIF ? (unlikely)
Re: TOLL FINES
did you live on the motorway or were you in PT for a long time? that is a heck of a lot of money for tolls plus fines - i'd take the time to either get it translated or type it into Google translate and find out exactly what it sayscongerman wrote:I hired a car last April in Faro and travelled around using the motorway.

Re: TOLL FINES
I believe that the standard fine is 10 X the toll fee, so that really is not a very big number
Re: TOLL FINES
If you want I can help you translate it.
Scan it (take out the parts that you don't want anyone to see, like name, fiscal nr., address,...) and I can help you translate it. send PM if you want.
Regards,
DeLorean

Re: TOLL FINES
You may have incurred the tolls associated with the next person who hired that particular car. Happened to my son-in-law. He incurred a toll fee 3 days before he returned car. He left forgetting to pay toll. He checked online and got a friend who was over in CVO to go to Post Office and pay the fee (less than €2) but by time friend got there, fee was up to €5. PO worker could tell friend more tolls incurred after son-in-law had returned car. They won't 'separate' fees incurred by different hirers.
Re: TOLL FINES
Our experience at the Post Office is very different.
They look at the data, ask us to confirm our tolls and those are the ones we pay.
Never been asked to pay anyone elses.

Not to be too provocative.......
Has anybody who came here as a holiday maker, had the fine notice......and just ignored it??? If so what was the followup???

Vanessa and I signed up to a Via Verde a couple of years ago and arranged to pay any tolls by direct debit. We do not use the motorway that often , and when we do the box beeps , yet we have never been charged. We know we are on the system because we had to renew the direct debit mandate just before Christmas.

I'll pass your post on to the authorities, what's your address.Mike Burton wrote:Vanessa and I signed up to a Via Verde a couple of years ago and arranged to pay any tolls by direct debit. Re: TOLL FINES
We attempted to pay our toll at the post office last week, the tolls listed for the car came to around €10, we had only made one journey from the airport to cvo but we were told pay all or nothing. No prizes for guessing what we did.EMM wrote:Our experience at the Post Office is very different.

Did you sign up as a resident, if so you get so many free journeys per month free?
Re: TOLL FINES
Not any more. The free journeys and discounts were ruled illegal so everyone pays the same price now. The Via Verde system is however very much more convenient and operates on all motorways.
Re: TOLL FINES
If the hire company have your credit card info they might charge your card to cover the tolls.
If thats a possibility, tell your card company you lost the card and get another sent out. Don't use that hire company again, and file the letter in the bin
