Dolphins

Post by Bruce Wallis »

Julia and I were walking along the clifftops between Praia de Rocha and Alvor, when we spotted a school of 50+ dolphins about a kilometre off shore, heading east to west.
The school was spread out over about a kilometre, and were frequently surfacing in several mini pods of 6 or 8, over that distance.

Sadly we didnt have a camera with us, but it was a wonderful, and uplifting sight.

We saw a similar sight, about this time, 2 years ago, and understand that they migrate down to the Cape St Vincent area in order to breed and give birth.
It's also likely that they are following the shoals of sardines and horse mackerel.

We also saw around 40 dolphions swim across Carvoeiro bay and Paraiso Beach two weeks ago. Some were within 100 feet of the cliffs and others were slightly furtnher out. It was one of the days that the ocean was very calm.
