Charging a Satnav in the car!

I borrowed a satnav for the last 3 trips and each time the usual lead going into the cigarette lighter would not charge the satnav, ie no red illuminated light. Try it back home in the UK and no problem. Has anyone else had this problem, or can you shed any light on this issue? Its certainly baffling us.

If this is a modern car (probably hire?) then some of them do not even connect up the lighter terminal in the car - my daughter's Renault Clio is an example.

Is there a secondary (cigarette lighter) power socket in the boot for plugging in a torch, compressor, coolbox etc?

Yes they are modern cars, like a Punto etc. No idea about the boot, never thought about this as the actual male socket fits into the female socket (cigarette lighter), but clearly does not properly connect. If no one else has this problem when bringing their satnav's from home, then it presumably is something wierd about our one. Also hadn't ever thought the lighter would not be connected up. I guess I need to check with TR. Having said that it was the same with the other car hire company too.

Is the cigarette lighter unit in the holder? does it work? if so it's your socket - might be a lousy contact on the base?

How do you mean in the unit? The female part is on the lower dashboard area of the hire car. My male end attaches into the cigarette lighter and the other end into the satnav.

Is there just the hole there or is there an actual lighter that plugs in - if so, does the lighter work?

I suggest next time you rent a car you try it before you drive away and query it with the rep if it doesn't work.

yes it does have the actual lighter. I forget that part of it. We pull it out so it's never in the female. However cannot remember on the hire cars, so will have to check. if it's missing maybe it's not linked up, but sounds crazy as i expect it to be part and parcel of a car.

LICY - you may also find that there is more than one "lighter socket" in the hire cars - for example, my car has one on the dashboard and one in the small compartment between the front seats. Although in my car both work, it may be the case that only one is connected in the hire car as cigar lighters are in some cars considered an "additional option".

Oh my goodness, all sounds mad to me. maybe we should check that immediately at the carpark, but we are always in such a hurry to get to CT.

I know this might be a bit revolutionary, but why dont you charge the satnav up before you use it - the battery usually lasts a couple of hours - so you can even get lost!

Guess what I was really clever and did just that, but I just want a satnav that works in the hire car. Does your one work in your car at CVO?
