Not sure if any one can advise? we need to do a will only our lawyer wants to charge 250€ plus tax each we are not sure if this is the normal cost, or can we do this ourselves?

I agree that sounds really good value. Just make sure that includes the Notary costs as that is what pushes the price up. From memory they are around €130 per will but don't quote me on the actual price!!

I think my lawyer would do it for a lot less - we went through this with two other people on MC - their lawyer wanted €500 for both - I believe they paid half that - PM me if you want her name and I will check it out for you.

We did our joint will about 3 years ago and i couldn't believe how expensive it was compared to uk. We paid around 800 euros but i'm afraid it is something that you have to have for peace of mind.

A word of caution: if you have two wills drawn up in different countries then they need to be extremely well drafted and cross checked to ensure that you do not create conflict between the two - especially if both are within the EU.

Maybe the way to go would be to have your will in UK/Ireland include your Portuguese property and get a Portuguese lawyer to lodge it with the notary but mabye this is not possible as suspect it would have to be in Portuguese to be legal in Portugal? When purchasing our lawyer in Loule stated that a Portuguese will would not supercede a will made in your country of residence.

Yes, or a Portuguese will which states that your English will takes precedence in relation to any assets owned by you in Portugal.

We had our portuguese wills done about 20 years ago. At that time we were advised that we needed separate wills for Uk to cover UK assets and Portuguese to cover portuguese assets. Cannot remember why, but I think it was something to do with the different inheritance laws. Things may be different now, but I doubt it.
