Tim, of the two places, has decided to call it quits. He closed down last Sunday.

It could be that trends are changing, holiday makers and Residents must now be increasingly staying at home rather than going out for a drink. One of the main factors that has reduced our visits to the village at night is the lack of good live music ( karaoke is not music or entertaining unless you are a sadist ) . Is it not time for the Camara to re think its policy on this and for the Carvoeiro association to wrk with bars and the council to find a compromise that works for bar owners and nearby residents.

We are the ones who can be seen running past the Roundup with our fingers in our ears as some " drink relaxed "individual destroys a well known song. If I was unfortunate to live above it like Bradys neighbours I would be calling the GNR to get them to shut up.
Only professionals should be allowed to pick up a microphone.

You really are a barrel of fun EMM, surely Karaoke and the like are what holidays are all about, enjoying ones self and having fun, live and let live – maybe you should live somewhere where its not a holiday resort.

You are taking it too seriously, I have no problem with Karaoke if it is done well but 99.999% of the time it isn,t.
Bars should show an instant replay of every performance then that would be real holiday entertainment.
Why do bars offer Karaoke because it is cheap, they do not have to pay a professional. My original point is that the closure of bars is due in part to the lack of live entertainment which no amount of Karaoke machines will change.

EMM does have a valid point. Bars are closing down. Last August, absolute peak, myself and mrs soap walked all the way up as far as Vimar looking for a bit of music in the bars on restaurant hill. I had read somewhere that there was music in Bar Accordia (?) but there wasn't. None in Bradys, or Carvoeiro Bar either. Black Stove did have music to be fair . . Round Up was jammers. Mungos had karaoke,but karaoke is by its very nature 'variable' Having walked up and back we decided that the 'best' on offer was in the Mirochoro hotel. 'best' transpired to be a Portuguese guy playing on a organ and 'singing' vintage songs. In the courtyard between the two main blocks. To be fair he wasn't bad, and we were joined by our friends and we had a bit of craic. But at midnight he had to pack up and go. Most holiday makers would consider midnight early. When we first moved into our apt we had live music most nights in our living room courtesy of a restaurant/bar directly below us on the 'out' road, the one with the wagon wheels. Sadly now also closed. If its true that Jailhouse is closed.......well, doesn't auger well for tourists coming to CVO and expecting a bit of nightlife. Peace and quiet are one thing, dead as a dodo something else.

Luckily I am able to enjoy myself without live music, however, I believe there are now issues with music licenses being granted to various establishments, something that didn’t seem to be a problem a few years back, I know for a fact that Dan in Mungo’s has had massive run in’s with the local council on this issue, having at one stage to apply on a daily basis for his music license, what sort of nonsense is that? Residents have their rights as well, so I suppose early finishes for live music (midnight?) will or is the compromise. Carvoeiro is dying, Libbre in Happy's said to me two years ago that ''' Carvoeiro is F....d'' maybe he has a point, I have seen alot of changes over the years and not all for the good. I will be holidaying in Alvor this year with the odd trip to Carvoeiro to visit friends, that may or may not become a permanent arrangement. Time will tell.

This is such an interesting point - evening entertainment and the opinions of residents and tourists. As a tourist in his 50's (just), I will avoid karaoke, even when I was younger, I'd avoid karaoke. Whilst I have passed bars using karaoke and they have appeared busy, for me CVO is not the type of resort for this means of entertainment. Me and my good lady would much rather sit in a nice bar with a bit of live music, even if it is a bit cheesey!! Like Joey said, I too have walked around town looking for live music, usually only finding anything at The Black Stove. If I were a resident my attitude would probably be different. Let's not forget, a "tourist" naturally wants to be entertained and if that means live music then so be it. Yes, finding it is becoming more and more difficult - will that stop me visiting CVO ? NEVER !!

There's always been live music in the square during the peak season - and the last year or so in the square at Monte Carvoeiro. Also, the Jazz Club at Monte CVO twice a week - if you want it, you can find it.

Karaoke is not my bag at all - having suffered last year being right above the one at Monte CVO, listening to the dreadful noise until 2 - 3 in the morning, personally I would cheerfully kill all those who take part in it (JamieLyon4 included!!!!). However, I know lots of people like it, so as long as I don't have to hear it, let it continue.

Yes there was music in the Square and Monte Carvoeiro, no longer outside of Mungos. The audience for these seemed to be predominately families with children or those looking for a cheap night out. They certainly did not seem to be spending money in the bars .
Sadly Carvoeiro will see those looking for a lively night out go elsewhere for their holiday. Most of us will still come into town for the occaisonal meal and stay for a few drinks. But if cooking at home there is no real incentive to make the effort to come in unless you do want Karaoke or to watch football /sports on the TV ( if still available ).
This is an area that the Carvoeiro association should involve itself in. Bars like Brady's even allowing for the disputes with their neighbours did book acts that were too loud . As complaints grew so the aititude of the GNR and council hardened.
The Roundup seems able to carry on but it does have noticeable lower noise levels than those bars which have had problems.
The council should relax the rules at least allowing accoustic performers and extend the nightime deadline. . We would at least have something to listen to as we sip our Sagres.

Strange post this.
Round Up caters for a varied type of customer, Brits and other nationalities alike...and most times we've been in there it's v busy.
Great fun, decent people, brilliant atmosphere, good staff and an entertaining owner.
All the ingredients of a great night out, after dinner, whilst on holiday.
A very successful formula.
This model doesnt suit everyone but there's enough choice to have a quieter drink.

As for longer term for CVO it's not known as Villa Country for nothing. If i was paying £2000 or similar for a 2 week stay i'd want to stay in a few nights!

Forgive me, for once I have to agree with EMM
When we first visited CVO the live evening entertaining was great and CVO was bustling even out of season.
It's really difficult to find entertainment and the Camara decisions have crippled good businesses.
Maybe Libbre is right
