Congratulations to Smilers Bar
Re: Congratulations to Smilers Bar
We were talking to a neighbouring bar owner who was also offered " free furniture " by one of the beer suppliers.
He declined not just for reasons of good taste but also because nothing is really free and that these deals always come with conditions that
end up costing the bar owner.

Amazing pictures of Carvoeiro pre Smilers bar. We've been fortunate in visiting a couple of other locations before they became popular as tourist resorts, such as Mojocar in Spain and Pissouri in Cyprus. Having said that, we certainly like Carvoeiro as it is now.

Some places change over the years, not always for the better, but Carvoeiro has only improved over the years we have been visiting. The town is fine, just a slight problem with some itinerants, but that seems to be the norm since border controls were relaxed.

Thanks Tony!Tony Knight wrote:Have you tried Cliff Richard's Vida Nova? I don't think it's classed as a chardonnay, but it's got a very distintive taste. I think that I could get quite used to it (wishful thinking)!!!!!

Should I ever decide to drive an old London Routemaster down to France and into Portugal I will stock up the bus with Cliff Richard's Vida Nova! Not to drink but as back-up fuel if there is no garage in sight.

It would be interesting to know if it is popular among the more affluent Portuguese or is it just aimed at the Tourist market trading on Cliffs name.

Re: Congratulations to Smilers Bar
Product themed seating and umbrellas outside bars and cafes is a normal sight in most holiday resorts and city centres abroad and in the UK. They go back to the days of Martini and Cinzano in the 50s (and before). I think they've always been a familiar part of the street scene. Perhaps the critics could suggest their alternatives, bearing in mind that they would probably be suggesting high price stuff which would cost the owners a site more than the themed freebies.
Smilers, in common with many other establishments in Carvoeiro and elsewhere in the Algarve, now have new furniture. Some places have the new Coke Zero chairs which look quite good in shiny black, but I suppose it's all a matter of taste (as are the products!).
We've used Smilers many times over the years and have always received a pleasant welcome and value for money. A great place from which to watch the world go by. Why is it that some posters on this site seem to have a downer on Smilers?
