Hi
He will need a lawyer and he/she can organise the fiscal number for your friend. He could try Paula Meireles paulameireles@carvoeiroadvogados.com who has an office close to Winkworths in Carvoeiro. She speaks perfect English and I can 100% recommend her.

Why pay a lawyer 100 odd euros or more when you can just go down to Lagoa FInances office with your passport and request a fiscal number.
Re: obtaining a fiscal number?
I agree with Andy. We used a fiscal rep who has kept our cards and now denies all knowledge of having them. We paid our tax in April at Lagoa and they were really helpful.

What has a dodgy Fiscal Rep got to do with a Lawyer??? The guy will need a good Lawyer to avoid the mistake you made and avaiod all the other crooks (builders, property agents et al!!!).
To the prospective purchaser - disregard all the advice about how easy it is, how to save the price of a meal and go and meet Paula yourself and then decide whether or not to DIY !! CVO dot com is full of stories about how members gor ripped off and mostly because they did not have the advice from, the assistance of and a good enforceable contract in place from a good honest Lawyer. An initial meeting will cost you nothing!!!

I think you are getting a little confused here. You do not need the services of a lawyer to get a fiscal number. A trip to the Financas with your passport should be sufficient. It might be an idea to got initially to find out exactly what documents you would need to produce. Time was you needed someone who had lived here for a while to vouch for you but not sure if this is still the case. It certainly wasn't when we got our numbers 7 years ago. Of course there is a little fee to pay but you do not need to incur unnecessary expense for a simple matter. A good lawyer independent from a builder or estate agent is a must when buying property.

With the greatest respect I am not confused at all. Alf1956 asked if his friend could use his address and asked if anyone could advise him. I suggest that it is 100% good advice to take PROPER legal advice on that very point.
Pickwick
P.S. Alf 1956 there may be consequences for you in allowing your friend to use your address if something goes wrong in the future with your friends house purchase - but maybe there will not be any consequences either. But in my experience it pays to get professional advice you can rely on if there is a shadow of doubt about the risks (if any) for you and your friend. You probably have your own Lawyer in Portugal, if so ask him/her. Do not rely on the barrack room Lawyers on the forum as you will have no redress.

P.P.S. The worst that can happen is you get good legal advice on the matter for a few €. The worst that can happen if you do not take advice is ??????????

Re: obtaining a fiscal number?
Pickwick there is no 'with respect' from you just an unbelievable arrogance and a bizarre desire to make life more complicated than needed.
Obtaining a fiscal number is very easy
Simply go to the local tax office (financa's) with your friend, proof of their address and your passport, give them approx 7 euros - job done
You'll get a temporary paper with the number on it.
Your friend is just offering a mail address, not offering to be responsible/ or is responsible for your affairs in any way.
The only exception to this is if you requested that he/she be your fiscal representative, as per the old legislation.
You simply return to the financa's and ask them to change the address when its appropriate.
Best of luck

Re: obtaining a fiscal number?
Whilst I would never accuse Pickwick of "unbelievable arrogance", my current experience tends to support Mattoserraos point of view.
There is a vested interest in some quarters to portraying doing anything in Portugal as an insurmountable mountain to climb.
To my surprise, this isnt always the case, once you try something.
I dispensed with my Fiscal Rep, last year, and surprise, surprise....the earth did not crumble around my head.
Go to the Financa office in Lagoa...it's best accessed by going in the far end by the roundabout, and parking up near the Health Centre.
Go in....tell them what you wish to achieve, and they will direct you to an English speaker who is only too ready to assist.
If you need a good solicitor, I can direct you to one in Silves, who is very good, and certainly wont cost you as much as one here in Carvoeiro. PM me for details if you wish.

Re: obtaining a fiscal number?
thank you all for the advice you have given.my friend just wants a fiscal number so as to be ahead of the game for next year when he is thinking of buying a property over here.i have advised him that when he does look to buy it is a 100% must to use a reputable lawyer so as to avoid being on one of those "holiday homes form hell" shows !!
Re: obtaining a fiscal number?
on my last visit to CVO I was was informed about the financas office in Lagoa now taking direct debits for property tax. On my next visit in late August I am going to do exactly as BW did, visit the Financas in Lagoa and take it from there. And hopefully shortly afterwards be able inform my current financal reps that I no longer require their services.Bruce Wallis wrote: I dispensed with my Fiscal Rep, last year, and surprise, surprise....the earth did not crumble around my head.
