Thanks for all the info about the Health Centres. Do you know if the €5 charge applies for both residents and regular visitors like us. We have the EU health cards. Never had to use them so not sure how they work.

All residents and nationals have to pay 5.00 euros regardless, foreign visitors maybe pay a little bit more not sure.

I have just last year had two cataract operations and a new replacement hip, all on the Portuguese national health service and I cannot speak highly enough of the treatment I received. The health centres in Carvoeiro and Lagoa both have English speaking doctors, as have the local x-ray clinics with a very short waiting list. I am sure the treatment out here is on a par or even better than the UK. Yes, the private Drs. all speak english and prescription discounts do apply to their prescriptions but if you are coming here to live registering with the local Health clinics is really the way to go. Both my husband and I have both had to have treatment in the emergency department of Barlavento hospital and again received excellent treatment and advice in a comparitively short time, not hours to wait like the UK.

You go to the reception at the health centre.
The receptionist will ask to see your card. Once she has checked it, you pay your 5 euros.....and off you go.
Easy-peasy!!

Thanks to everyone. We hope we will never need the medical services while we are in Carvoeiro but it is nice to know all the info. Different subject - we have just had a day without rain here in Dorset (the sun shone!). Not quite like the Algarve but a nice reminder of what to expect when we come over in September.

keela wrote:Centro da Saude ( health centre) is a general health centre. sometimes the doctors speak English and sometimes not. If they do it can be a bit hit and miss. There is usuallya charge to see the doctor, in the region of 1.5 to 3.00 euros. Other things are also chargeable, like x-rays and obviously the prescriptions are payable. Personally I would rather pay a little more and see a doctor who can speak English, it makles it a whole lot easier to tell them exactly what is wrong and if you have aches and pains.
where in CVO is the Centro da Saude ( health centre) ?
