English speaking GP in Carvoeiro

Post by Jackcara »

Good evening friends

We are shortly moving to our villa in Carvoeiro and we are looking for a good, English-speaking GP in Carvoeiro or nearby. Does anyone have any recommendations please?

There are several private doctors in the village that all speak English.

I would recommend:

Dr K Vieira
Centro Médico
Carvoeiro Terrace,
Povo Burro
8400 CARVOEIRO
Tel 282 350 780 Tml 934 014 125 (08.00-20.00)
drkvieira@gmail.com

Above Columbo's Rest/Bar

There is a 50euro charge for a consultation, but this is the norm in Portugal.

Really nice guy, although he is Dutch he speaks excellent English, we have used him as a 'Family Doctor' for several years, easy to talk to.

completely endorse this recommendation; Dr Vieira is a lovely guy; don't be put off by his 'shakes', it's some sort of neuro disorder, he really knows his stuff & can even perform minor surgery if needed

Thanks. It is good to know how much a visit to a GP in Portugal will cost. What about the Health Centers in Carvoeiro and Lagoa, what services do they provide and is it free like the NHS?

Centro da Saude ( health centre) is a general health centre. sometimes the doctors speak English and sometimes not. If they do it can be a bit hit and miss. There is usuallya charge to see the doctor, in the region of 1.5 to 3.00 euros. Other things are also chargeable, like x-rays and obviously the prescriptions are payable. Personally I would rather pay a little more and see a doctor who can speak English, it makles it a whole lot easier to tell them exactly what is wrong and if you have aches and pains.

This advice is fine if you have health insurance - if not bear in mind that if you see one of the (excellent Dutch/German) doctors any follow-up medication or treatment is private and expensive.

Only by going to the Centro da Saude can you get health service treatment (and normally they will find someone who can speak english) which is generally good although with some rough edges such as poor food and sometimes cramped wards.

I agree.....dont be too keen to shell out 50 euros or so.....I've seen doctors and been treated at the health centres in both Lagoa and Carvoeiro, and the treatment was first class, better than the UK.
The Portuguese doctor I saw spoke perfectly adequate English.
The cost 5 euros, not 50.
