EDP been overcharging

has anybody had any news from EDP about the faulty electricity meters or got one of the meters that have been over charging ?it appears that the multi-time meters have been set wrong thus charging the wrong rate at the wrong times.it states there are in excess of a 100,000 customers that have been over charged due to some fault with the electricity meters & EDP have set aside 4 million euros to pay out in compensation which works out approx 40 euros per customer.you may consider me a touch cynical but 40 euros compensation per customer does not seem a lot considering the high price of electricity also the estimated amount of customers affected by this started at 30,000 & now its a 100,000 ??? i think they should perhaps send an e mail or a letter out to customers identifying exactly which meters have faults as how would the customer know & i would not trust them as 30,000 to 100,000 is more than a third increase & that could be just the tip of the iceburg.

Seems it only applies to dual tariffs so it doesn't affect me but I know from my Economy 7 tariff in the UK that you have to keep an eye on the timers to make sure they are correct.

thats an interesting link as that say that states 480,000 customers could be affected&not 100,000 as EDP were saying !!!

Yes Widge, same as we are on.

Strangely, we had an EDP guy visit our house last Friday, asking where the meter was. We only had a reading done a couple of days earlier, so now I'm wondering what he was here to do.

As this was the first I've heard about the cock up at EDP I never thought to ask what he was doing.

Anyone any idea if incorrect meter owners will be contacted, or will EDP change the times etc without people knowing.

Also from the 1st January 2012 (not sure if you are aware of this but) they brought in a new tax based off a straight percentage of electricity consumed called Imposto Especial Consumo Electricidade. Number of kWh consumed x €0,001 + IVA @ 23%,
"The new excise duty on consumption of electricity created by commitment to the troika".

I feel sorry for the Portuguese consumer.

Vat is 23% in Ireland, Greece and Portugal, at the insistance of the Troika.

In Ireland vat is 13% on gas and electricity, and 9% on tourist activites ie hotels and restaurants
Greece is shortly to reduce vat on hotels etc to 5% to encourage tourists.

Portugal on the other hand appears to be doing the exact opposite. There was a post recently saying it cost €120 to unclamp a car on restaurant hill. I know it cost a tourist €300 to unclamp an illegally parked car at Centiennes beach. I have nothing against clamping but this is pure extortion. €80 is sufficient penalty for illegal parking on the street and maybe €120 for the parking at Centiennes. Everything above this is extortion. I don't know how restaurants are expected to sell good food at reasonable prices to tourists who can and will go elsewhere if they feel are not getting good value. So far they have managed but for how much longer?

I have been told that EDP very rarely read meters, just take an estimated "punt" They then estimate the next estimated reading on that punt, and so on.

My March reading was 700 euros, 50% over the top because of this practice.

I was told they do this to encourage clients to submit accurate and up to date readings!

My new managing agent exceeded expectations again today when she forwarded a letter from EDP advising me that I have been credited with a refund for over charging since the beginning of 2010!

My new managing agent exceeded expectations again today when she forwarded a letter from EDP advising me that I have been credited with a refund for over charging since the beginning of 2010!

It's a joy to work with people you can trust and rely upon to put your interests first.

I pay by direct debit and have received a small refund in both 2011 and 2012. They read the meter sometime in May and adjust the June payment accordingly. They then forward an email with their estimate of what the following 11 direct debits should be and at that stage you can adjust them up or down. They adjusted the monthly figure last year to take account of the increase in vat. Surprisingly accurate over the 12 months.
