As a result of the furore (across the region) back in 2010 - there is a much higher Police/GNR presence which seems to have helped. Roadblocks are commonplace and patrols plentiful - and all that entails.

However, it does not mean you can let your guard down - quite the opposite. Opportunists thieves are everywhere - like the UK - so don't give them the oxygen to survive.

Behave as if the property was your own and use the same degree of vigilance and proactiveness - and you will not have a problem.

On the point of GNR roadblocks/patrols - don't feel that you are 'bombproof' after that drink on the house - with that extra policing comes a major crackdown on Drink-Driving - and rightly so. The process here is to go straight to jail - the questions come later.

Is the law regarding "defending yourself/property" the same in Portugal as the U.K. or can occupants do a bit more damage to the scumbags when detected ?
