amongst all the rubbish in my mail box yesterday was a leaflet headed ' guia tdt' and although I cannot read Portuguese I gather from this booklet that half the Algarve is going digital on 12/01/12 and from the very approximate map provided cvo is 'probably' included in this switchover, 2nd phase is the islands and 3rd phase, remainder of Portugal is scheduled for 26th April.

I posted previously that Ireland was going MPEG 4 when we switch over to digital and this means that if you don't have a brand new tv capable of receiving MPEG 4 you have to purchase a new decoder in order to reveive Irish digital tv signals, which is a pain as most of us receive UK channels and Uk digital is MPEG2.

From this leaflet Portugal is also going MPEG 4 and there are a number of diagrams showing how to connect your 'new' decorder in order to receive digital tv. Fully understand the tv aerial one but there is also one showing how to connect your satellite signal to the tv via this new decoder. I though that if you received Sky you it would not matter if you had a decoder or not but perhaps they are referring to Portuguese satellite signals only.

You are correct that they are switching over to digital terrestrial TV using the MPEG4 standard. Set top boxes are available in many outlets and can be bought for €20-30. If you receive Sky or any other satellite based system already then you can ignore the switchover - it is the analogue transmission of RTP1, RTP2, SIC and TVI that will be turned off.

but I already have a 40' tv in Portugal, I don' want another one

and yes as a border resident I will probably upgrade to a new telly later this year capable of receiving MPEG2/4 but will have to purchase some of those decoder boxes for around the house - the only output from them is HDMI so you cannot feed a splitter box from them.

Secenario: aerial leads (receiving uk/irish/sky) into house, into dvd recorder, and then back up into attic where it feeds a splitter box which in turn feeds everywhere else in the house. simples. irish tv goes to mpeg4 in october so might be possible to feed the dvd recorder with either a hdmi/scart from the new decoder box and maybe this will work

to make life slightly more complicated my sky box is also in the attic and we just use one of those 'eye' thingy's to change channel. works fine - and where I am currently employed we have literally dozens and dozens of tv's on all the time and also use those eye things to move channels from one sport to another so that you can see everything thats currently live at the same time.

I think so, they have decoders for sale in the electrical stores for around €25. I'm sure the salespeople will be able to advise.

The same four, the epg gives you an hd fifth but then says it is not available
