I would want to know of any crime problems in any area I lived in wherever I was in the world. What is the point of constantly comparing the problems in the Algarve with what's happening in the UK? Perhaps some people should stop showing so much concern for their bank balance & more for the Algarve community.

It's no good pretending bad things don't happen by not reporting them
Look at that case of the ex copper who was attacked in Lagos - despite his embarrassment he wanted people to know what happened in order to prevent others from making the same mistake as him - if only one person benefits from this it is worth it.

I agree, I want to know what happens in the Algarve both good and bad.
I think however that to suggest that property owners want to hide the information on crimes is ridiculous,
I doubt if any holidaymaker these days expects to come to a country and find it crime-free. Perhaps on a fixed date
we should all post the front pages of our local newspapers in the UK and then it will put the 'crime wave' in the Algave in perspective.

My " Get Real " comment was aimed at those who are under the illusion that either the Algarve should be crime free or is virtually a war zone.!!
We accept that crime is part of life in most of the world why should anyone think it will be different in the Algarve,

The thread suchas this one by Martin are not in my opinion posted as a scource of information but rather reflect the atitude to their life in Portugal. Putting it bluntly they would rather be somewhere else.

As for " Blue " I am sure the few 100 thousand who rely on the tourist and related service sector for their employment have a very different view point . Maybe he/she does not need to work and would not be bothered to see an Algarve even deeper in recession.

I think the Portuguese government are doing a pretty good job of discouraging tourism.

Report anything that is newsworthy GOOD or BAD
So lttle happens in the Expat communities that so much is made of events and printed in the TWO english language papers that would not even get on the bottom of page 23 of a local UK newpaper.
There is no real evidence of a fall in total tourism yes those from the UK and Ireland may be down but that is because of problems in those countries it has got little to do with anything the Portuguese government is doing.

EMM you really are very stupid, what does whether I need to work or not have anything to do with it, either way why on earth would I "not be bothered" to see the country I love & have chosen to make my home in go even further into recession? I do, however, want to know if there are crimes going on in or around the area in which I live. I would have thought that was just commen sense & though I do read or try to read a Portuguese newspaper my grasp of the language is not as good as it should be so I also read the two english language papers, a lot of us find them very useful.

All the cleaners, bar staff, builders, delivery men etc etc are far more concerned about their bank balances than any story in the Algarve English language press
You refer to the Algarve Community we Brits now are a small part of that with declining economic and numerical influence .

I do not suggest that the crimes go unreported I just do not think that they justify the attention they get, if so why are not crimes against the Portuguese population reported in the same way.

EMM in your first post on this topic you said that the news in question had been reported on PT TV the previous evening so someone there certainly saw justification in giving it attention !

I have never got the impression that Martin was trying to bad mouth the Algarve for any reason and certainly not because he wanted to get away. His reports have always been for more serious events and were very worthwhile and informative especially to those of us owners who do not live in Portugal full time. He certainly did not deserve to be berated for his efforts and to have him driven away because of that is really unfair. I think you should apologise to him and ask him to come back. ( Ivor Largen should do the same but I never took his post seriously anyway however Martin probably did )
