Does anyone on the forum have any experience of the European Commission Solvit service?

http://ec.europa.eu/solvit/site/about/index_en.htm

Reading their overview it seems that it might be possible to use the service on the basis of the way the tolls are being applied to visitors from other member states as it puts them in a situation where they cannot avoid a penalty charge when returning to their home state.

I've just registered an online complaint but I suspect they will say it's not what they do.

Any news on your tolls, have you been charged by travel rent or received a fine yet.

No word yet, though Steen has reported up to 6-8 months delay in processing claims. Re the post about owning a property and owing tax and the Portuguese actually being efficient in collecting it etc, I was under the impression that Via Verde was a private operator. Under EU laws of privacy etc I doubt the hire purchase company are entitled to hand over your passport details to anyone else and even then how would Via Verde collate your passport number with your Fiscal Number without violating EU privacy laws? Travelrent still have my credit card impress so THEY might debit the card with any bills they receive. Its a mess.

You can check if you have to make any payments by putting in your number plate on the CTT website: http://www.ctt.pt/fectt/wcmservlet/ctt/ ... divida.jsp

all very well ditzy but you cannot make a payment for the return journey to the airport as it doesn't hit until 48 hours later when you are back home. and if you check it then it will may include new rentals from the day you left the motor back.

very much appreciated...
basically steer clear of the A22 for your last couple of days and prior to that go into Intermache and pay the toll. The news agent concession near the WC is where you pay. Give them the registration details no less than 24 hours later. We got on Almancil to Guia and paid about €1.88. This was a mistake as we got lost. I think you have about 5 days to pay, but you may need to check back on the earlier postings. Also I posted to say the hire companies may end up paying .60 a day which of course you will pay on hire. They said this should kick in April. just don't hold your breath.

I have just been informed that the post office should accept payment for specific dates (but not partial payment for one day). Below a letter from the Algarve car hire association stating this, I would suggest printing a copy and bring it just in case there is a language problem at the post office;
ARA Algarve car hire association
--------------------------------
Caros Associados

Dear Members

Because some peculiar situations, related to payment, have been reported, I must inform the following:

- I had a meeting with management today CTT South Zone, where I was informed that when any user goes to the counter to settle a Car with Registration "X" toll, you can request information of the dates to which they relate and only pay for the dates you want.

- This information is correct and valid, and contrary with the answers that some Clients / Associates have heard, namely, "Either pay it or pay nothing!"
- The only exception is within a date with several passages, it is not possible to pay a part, which is understandable.

So, you can now tell customers that want to liquidate their toll at the CTT, that they can choose their dates.

If there is or will happen some situation, contrary to the above please report and tell what station CTT and / or employee.

I have cleared more than one episode of this soap opera that are the tolls and I hope that the agreement promised, will come soon ! ...

That still does not take into account the situation where you have one car, with two renters, in one day using the motorway. Whoever gets to the CTT first has to pay the whole lot. Surely the car rental companies should offer a service of paying the tolls and charging them back to the renter, that way they could split the cost between the two renters. Which would give everyone peace of mind. I bet the first one to do it would get a lot more business.

We are still waiting to see if and what toll charges appear on our next CC statement.
We only use the 22 from the airport and back again.

Do you have your own car, or are you using a rental car. If it is the latter, how do you pay.

It was a hire car and our hire company took CC details on arrival and we signed an agreement to cover the tolls for the duration of our stay.
We have used them for years ( 4-5 times/year ) so there is a high level of trust but we will see ??

Well if that is the case then that should ease the problem of the return journey and not being able to pay for 24 hours after you leave. Why are the car rental companies not telling this too potential renters on there web sites.

Steen what are YOR doing??
