Re: Tolls on the A22

Post by cereza »

A friend booked a rental car yesterday and the rental company's advice was :-

"You can pay at the pay shop, or if not, then you’ll receive it at home to pay it.
Other option free of charges is start to use the EN 125 which is free."

Helpful eh? :? :?

Yes, all customers would be charged the fixed rate.

This does seem to be the best solution, it will avoid all the problems we have discussed and take some traffic off the 125.

If it hirers are told in advance that the motorway is " TOLL FREE " for them then I think few will complain.

I would be very happy to pay a fixed fee and not have to worry about how to pay the toll. A good solution I think.

I agree a great solution, if they can make it work.

Don't know why they just didn't raise the fuel tax and be done with it, instead of all this tolls carry on.

Because they want to do both.

Thanks for reply, at least if this method is approved it will make things a lot easier for carhire users not having to worry about how they are going to pay for tolls, especially when they have left Portugal.

I hope they are sensible with the amount they intend to charge as the fuel price is bad enough. I must admit once we are at CVO we are unlikely to use the A22 as we do lots of short trips. On that basis to add more than about €10-15 on my bill will seem like a rip off. on another rip off I recall a few years ago going to pay the plot rates, but we were a couple of days late. We were not charged the usual fine so thought that was a tickle. Our lawyer then got a letter basically doubling the original bill because we had not paid the fine which of course they failed to inform us about until it was too late. Grrr!

Last night I was exchanging some thoughts with a couple of friends in a bar. Not one of them bothered to get a device for his car (one did once but there were none available), most of them did not have a clou how to pay for the tolls. Many said; Oh, I will just use the 125, I do not mind as I do not drive much.

This is the horror scenario that I am so afraid of. If large numbers of cars decide not to use the A22 in order to avoid paying tolls, the 125 will be crowded and very dangerous again!

You'll probably find the vast majority use the 125 anyway unless they are going to the airport.

I agree with LB on using the 125. The 125 will get busier, and there will be a lot more traffic on it, hopefully we will not be as affected as motorists closer to Faro and Albufeira. There will unfortunately be a lot more impatient driving as people rushing to work/meetings get frustrated with the traffic . Hopefully the rentals companies can come to some agreement and this will take some traffic off 125, especially holiday traffic during the peak summer months.

This year I ventured over the the west coast using the motorway as far as it went, and next year was hoping to reverse this and travel over to the eastern side, would very much depend on how the toll situation unfolds.

I think you will find the vast majority of holiday makers wount give two hoots about the cost of the tolls and use the motorway for their journey....as it was calculated earlier at less than 5 euro from Faro to Lagoa, its almost the same as a pint of beer...if the holiday is affected that much by the tolls I would suggest a different location for their holidays...residents I can fully understand :D
