It looks like the tolls are to start on December 8.

See The Portugal News //www.theportugalnews.com/. "Algarve motorway tolls start next week" dated 28/11/2011.

Any advice from the car hires companies yet?

It's official: tolls are to be levied on the Via do Infante as from December 8that a rate of 8.2 cents per kilometer.

As of yet no solution has been agreed for the car rental companies. One possible solution could be that the car rental companies install the chips in their cars and the client sign a Via Verde contract if he or she wish to use the motorways. The car rental company then post the contract to Via Verde and they'll bill the credit card on the contract in due time.

Is this (possible solution) likely to be in place by the 8th?

This sounds like the best solution to the problem, after all its not the payment of the tolls, but the how.

I've heard that the chips are not ready so it is highly unlikely that any system will be in place before December 8th.

I wonder how it'll cope with those visitors who are halfway through their visit when the tolls actually start?

The hire car company will get the bill for the tolls and no doubt charge our credit cards.

I figured as much - that's why I chose ECH. I reckon they won't rip me off.

HUH? :?

My question was meant seriously. The 'chips' needed for reading the license plates or for the devices in the cars?

There is a RFID chip in the Via Verde device which is read along with the photo of the number plate;

Pleased to see the Via Verde site now has english translations, including the following:-
The advantages of “Via Verde Visitors”:
• Automatic payment of all tolls, valid wherever found on the national toll road network;
• Available on national soil;
• Quick and easy, minus the hassle of going out your way and any administrative charges;
• Valid for 90 days;
• Avoids having to buy a Permanent Electronic Device;
• Allows for on-line consultation of all transactions;
• On-line access to the invoice / receipt
• Multilingual Customer Helpline available Mon-Fri 8:30am to 8:30pm.
Quick and easy, minus the hassle of going out your way
- how? when you still have to go to a Via Verde place to hire the equipment (states 'available soon' elsewhere.) In addition to the tolls there is also a weekly hire charge of 6 euros 1st week and 1.5 euros after.
• Allows for on-line consultation of all transactions;
• On-line access to the invoice / receipt

If there is on-line access, payment by credit card and they can read number plates to fine you, then why do you need to go the hassle of hiring equipment? why can you not just register a card and car number on line and they just charge your card for the tolls? This being Portugal .... oh yes, just answered my own question. This way is much more complicated, labour intensive and will create more fines.
