Donkey Sanctuary - A plee for help

I have created another topic for this now as it was lost in the stray dog topic.

I have been up to the sanctuary today and have been speaking to Kat and Bridie who do a fantastic job of looking after all the animals up there, but they need help from you all if possible.

I know the stray dog topic mentioned the need for wormimg tablets, but they are always in desperate need of the following:

Blankets, bedding, towels or any old curtains etc will be great as at this time of year they struggle to wash and dry the bedding for the dogs and cats
Cat and dog food
Rice and Pasta (they cook this up and feed to the old or sick dogs along with chicken or liver)
Dog collars (poundland in the UK or the chinese shops over here do really cheap ones!)
Grooming brushes for dogs, cats and donkeys
Cat Litter
Washing machine! (the one they have now is on its last legs and is the only means they have of trying to wash the bedding)

If you are able to help provide any of the above, then that would be absolutely fab! If you can't get up to the sanctuary yourselves, then please feel free to deliver it to us at Ma-Ja's restaurant in Carvoeiro and we will be more than happy to take it up there for you. We are currently open lunch and evening Thursday to Sunday inclusive and no this is not free advertising, just trying to help out the sanctuary

If you are unable to either drop the stuff at Ma-Ja's in Carvoeiro or the donkey sanctuary, then please use the shops. But please can you let me know, as the ladies that volunteer in the shops don't normally go to the sanctuary, so I will then go to the shop to pick the stuff up and take it to the sanctuary myself.

Looking forward to seeing all the goodies being delivered for the animals

Hi Jan, it won't be until next March I'm afraid when we are next out in CVO. Will certainly have some of our old beach towels that the sanctuary can have, as they are pretty good just faded and I like to replace. also will get some dog and cat food in. Wish there was more we could do whilst over here in Holland, but I'm glad you have posted this as I will def bring some bits up for you if that's ok. I'm not sure if we will have a car next time so may need your transport help. Or we can pop up to the resturant (which we intend to do anyway)

Thank you to those of you that have already donated items. I took these up to the sanctuary yesterday and they were all received with many thanks. But please do not give up donating any of the items as they are always in need of them.

An additional item to add to the list required if possible:

A child's stair gate.

This is required for the room where they keep the sick puppies to block off the door to stop the puppies getting out but to allow Bridie and Kat quick access.

Just to add that the CVO shop displayed a (small) notice to the effect that the sanctuary welcomed people who could spare a few hours to take a dog for a walk. We thought we would give it a try.
The Donkey sanctuary is a bit of a misnomer, there are almost 100 dogs there, which outnumber the cats and donkeys. Bridie gave us a tour and we took Bobby out for a lovely walk : the sanctuary is in lovely countryside near Estombar......(just down the road from Quinta de Valos, a rather fascinating winery/outside art exhibition and mini-zoo with free entry!)
I returned the next day to repeat the experience : there are plenty of different walks to go on. We learnt that Bobby is moving to Scotland to be rehomed later in the year.
I must add that you need to watch out for some of the dogs if walking through the main compound on your own : one nipped my ankle , but Bridie assured me they had all been vaccinated! Best to use the side entrance of have Bridie escort you , until they are familiar to you!
Will go again when we return.
Finally, we mentioned this ( the dog walking) to the lady in the Feraguedo shop, where there wasn't even a small notice : she knew nothing of it.
So, if you want to give a rescued dog an hour or two's exercise , give them a ring on 927336096

Just a quick update....

We were up at the Donkey Sanctaury yesterday and the kitten room has now been covered with tarpulin to stop the leaks and hence been repainted a bright blue. All the kittens that were in there have now been re-homed along with all but one of the puppies. Other good news is that 5 adult cats have also been re-homed this last couple of weeks with another couple due to go to their new homes in England on the 8th January. The dogs love going for their walks, so if anyone has a spare hour or so, then please go and take them for a walk!

Bridie and Kat would like us to pass on their many thanks for all your donations so far and wish you all a very Merry Christmas.

The donkey sanctuary is open from 11am to 4pm or we at the restaurant are open from 11 to 3 and then from 6 to 9 in the evening x
