We can add the following frequently heard.
Alboofera. alboofura. Laygos, laygosh, portimayo. carvo - airo. calf -airo.
Hopefully the Portuguese know where are talking about.

While on the subdject of pronouncing things I have always wondered how to say Ferragudo, is it Ferragoodoo or Ferragoodo? or something else?

Re: How do you pronounce
If you ask anyone from Lisbon, they will say that people from the Algarve don't speak proper Portuguese. I don't expect any of them expect perfect pronounciation from foreigners but it is nice to try.
Re: How do you pronounce
All words ending in 'o' (unless they have an accent) are pronounced 'oo', so it would be Ferragoodoo, Carvoeiroo, Faroo and so oncloudchaser49 wrote:While on the subdject of pronouncing things I have always wondered how to say Ferragudo, is it Ferragoodoo or Ferragoodo? or something else?

Re: How do you pronounce
I have been told that names ending in "o" are pronounced "oh" with a silent-ish nasal h, like the "m" in sim. oh well everyone seems to know where it is.
Re: How do you pronounce
I don't think I even know what a nasal 'h' sounds like!
Re: How do you pronounce
In Lisbon they would pronounce the end as "Oh" as in obrigado but the Algarvians tend to disregard the last syllable and so it comes out as "oo" but fading away so that it is barely heard. The other point to remember is that the double r in the middle of Ferragudo is pronounced like a French "R" from the back of the throat - "R" is pronounced this way when it is the first letter of a word but when a single "R" is in the middle of a word it is pronounced the same as we would in English.cloudchaser49 wrote:While on the subdject of pronouncing things I have always wondered how to say Ferragudo, is it Ferragoodoo or Ferragoodo? or something else?

Not sure where you heard that Cereza, the Algarveans would say 'obrigad' with no 'o' at all!cereza wrote:In Lisbon they would pronounce the end as "Oh" as in obrigado but the Algarvians tend to disregard the last syllable and so it comes out as "oo" but fading away so that it is barely heard.cloudchaser49 wrote:While on the subdject of pronouncing things I have always wondered how to say Ferragudo, is it Ferragoodoo or Ferragoodo? or something else?
