If your idea of Portuguese cuisine stops short at flambe piri-piri prawns, and stone steaks....read no further......

...if, however, like me, you seek the genuine Algarvian regional cuisine, as a counterpoint to the standard restaurant hill fayre, then get in your car, head over to Silves, and discover Recanto dos Mouros.

This local Portuguese restaurant sits below the walls of Silves Castle. All the way round the back of the castle, and almost in a line immediately opposite the road bridge into Silves off the N124.
Turn right after crossing the bridge. all the way down to the Messines roundabout. Go around the roundaboat and take the exit toward the cemetery.
Pass the cemetery, heading back up toward Silves. Bear right, following the road beneath the castle walls, and the restaurant is signposted about 500 m down on the right.

The menu is totally local food.
Starters including things like eels in white wine sauce...(erh not for me!)

The main courses included some fish, but majored on things like black pork, regional lamb stew, clams and beans, wild boar, and cataplanas.
No sign of steak or prawns!

We passed on the starters.
2 of our number shared an excellent pork and clam cataplana
One of us had the lamb stew served on fried bread.
I had a rich, luscious wild boar casserole....also served on fried bread
Everything came with delicious home made chips.....yes they peel potatoes here and deep fry them.....not a bag of frozen chips in sight!!

With wine and water, the whole bill for 4 came to 56 euros....14 euros each.

You want to taste real Portuguese food???? Try it.

We have been to this restaurant several times. It is a big room and mostly frequented by Portuguese people (which is a good sign.)
Marty always has the lamb stew on bread and I have the chicken piri piri or the fresh fish (if it is one I have heard of )
I am sure that it must be beautiful at night with the lit castle in the foreground. We went one Wed. night and that is the night they are closed.
Highly recommend also.

We have had many celebrations in this restaurant with our portuguse relatives it is always
a must for Sunday lunch.

Our friends first took us to this restaurant about 3 years ago and we have always had a lovely meal there and the staff are so firendly

also try the restaurant near the cork museum it has a yelow awning cant remember what it is called but I believe it is run by the same people, it is also very good. Mounchero Dos that maybe the name although I have probably spelt it totally wrong.

Nice place, good food, nice staff but stop telling people, I have been going there for 12 years or so and it is well patronised by locals

sorry will keep it to myself next time i find somewhere really really good .... now there is that place up the mountain ovre the hill and down the dale ...noooooo cant tell you otherwise all and sundry will be frequenting it, apart from myself hubby and a few locals.
