The moral.....the mozzies don't go near you because of the bad smell and I suppose the girls don't swarm after you either?

Well its obvious that the mossies go for the gorgeous attractive ladies like April, Ellie, Janet and myself  I woke up after forgetting to use anything or turn the plug in on  to find seven huge bites on my face!
I have never forgotten the plug in every night since and haven't had a bite. However, I haven't been out after dark since then either (the joys of having babies) so I'm not sure what I'd use. Probably have to go for the Avon stuff.
You can get Avon out there can't you?

If you do get bitten..whats the best way to treat it..April/Debs d'you know?
I usually dab antiseptic like Savlon on..but is there a herbal treatment?
speaking of bites has brought back a funny thing from my youth.....
I was about 16...and as usual had been out dancing night away.nice fella took me home....
When I got in,again my ma was waiting up for me (I was always late)..before going up to bed ..she reached her hand tilting my chin and stared in horror....
"where did you get that?"
Oh dear..not mossie but man (love bite)..
she went bananas!!
It was all very innocent..I was very innocent..and remember going to bed that night..convinced Id commited some terrible sin
How times have changed?
P.S. Is that right..its only the female mossie that bites?

I don't really know much about herbal remedies I'm afraid. I guess April is more the one to ask about that, although I do like treatments/face and body creams that are made from natural products raher than chemical.

I tend to swell up like a balloon with mossie bits and use anti-histhamine cream (I couldn't take tablets as I was either pregnant or breastfeeding). That seemed to get rid of the swelling eventually.

It would be nice to hear of a natural remedy.

…I’ve heard that mozzies inject something into your blood before sucking it….this something stops the blood congealing, and is what causes the swelling and itching…..
Ellie.. I use something called Fenistil which is a clear gel that dries and keeps the air off ... and no irritation…

Here in Muscat we're old hands at dealing with the pesky ones.

We never use any repellant that doesn't have deet in it - and the best one we've found is Mijex roll-on repellant (60% deet). Put it on lower legs, ankles and wrists before venturing out in the evenings.

As a secondary precaution we put smouldering mosquito coils underneath outdoor tables (mosquitoes tend to 'bounce' along at low levels) and citronella candles or torches around the garden where we're entertaining.

Always spray the entire house lightly before you venture out for the evening - the smell of the insecticide will have gone and so will the bugs by the time you get back. If you've got kids, spray their rooms a couple of hours before they go to bed.

If you need to sleep with the window open - try to cover the gap with a net or similar (which you can also spray with insecticide).

If you've been bitten and it is itching like mad, the simplest remedy we've found is just to hold an ice-cube against the bite for as long as it takes to stop the irritation (use a flannel to stop your fingers getting chilled and to catch drips. Simple but it works.

Then again, you may find that gin and tonic helps - and the ice is there ready to be used if it doesn't!

If anyone wants to try the Avon Woodland method, they've got a 2 for 1 offer on the UK website at the moment.
