Leaving the rear shelf open ( with nothing in boot) sounds a good idea. Don't like the idea of leaving the car unlocked though....think that would invalidate any insurance if car was stolen.

Just to report the conclusion : the hire car company decided to charge an extra 130€ , making the total cost 280€ , as the lock was " more dificult to renew than originally thought". The GNR wrote , in Portuguese, to say they were closing their case file ( no surprise there). The good news is that "carhireexcess.com" came up trumps and refunded me the 280€ in full.....the best £39.99 ( for a year's cover) that I have spent for some time!
