Licy: all the telecom providers in Portugal provide a dongle. I just use the vodafone €1 per hour one and it's ok for my needs. not a flier by any means but for the amount of time I am managing to spend in cvo at any one time it's good enough. Credit lasts 6 months with vodafone and if you don't top it up inside the 6 months the dongle stops working, so even though I still have enough credit to do me for this visit I will top it up at Intermarche and it will last until April. There are faster, better and more expensive options available.

Is there a minimum amount you can place on the dongle in any given 6 months or in any one hit? For example if you put on €10 now then used €7 and then put on €5 in 4 months time would that be OK? Also would it run from the time you topped it up? Sorry don't understand all this technology. I've not even seen a dongle. I lead a sheltered life.

a dongle is basically a USB stick. don't know about as low as €5 but definitely €10 and it keeps the service active for 183 days from day of purchase. So suppose I go to intermarche on sunday and have say €8 left on my dongle and top up by €10 that brings my credit up to €18 (18 hours - in five min segments I think)and it will keep the service active until sometime next april. If I was out in say March I could top up again and then it's active until Sept. you get the drift. it does'nt matter how much credit you have, you still have to top up each 6 months. if you are a heavy user you will have to top up with greater amounts or more frequently. I know you are supposed to be able to top up online but I don't understand the instructions in Portuguese :oops:and at an multibanco atp, but I find the easiest way is just to go to intermarche and they do it all for you with a smile. I found the Vodafone shop in Guia very helpful but I am sure the other suppliers are equally as helpful.

I know an Irish guy called Frank McCartney but I'm pretty sure Paul McCartney was born in Liverpool. I expect there are Irish origins somewhere in the family tree.
