buying freeview and tv sets portimao ? help

hi all.l am carl and last month l purshased an apartment in carvoeiro to use for holidays, having recently retired, l have been quoted 395 euros to have a 1.37m satelite dish and wiring and didgy box for freesat purchased and fitted is that about right ? also where can i buy a flat screen tv at a reasonable price near portimao, many thanks in advance

If you can bring your FREESAT box out with you from the UK.
They are certainly more expensive from your Portuguese supplier.

You can get a TV from wortens, or Box or any of the big electrical retailers on the Portmao retail park ( on the N125 ) or the Algarve shopping centre at guia or the shopping centres in Portimao.

We got our freesat box on Amaxon and they shipped it free. The TV we purchased at Radio Popular in Portama Retail Park.

amazon , have just sent me a 22" samsung lcd TV with dvd , free sat built in , £194.39 inc shipping took just 1 week for it to arrive .
Portugese shops cannot come any where nesr on price !!!

You need to make sure that you get the biggest satellite dish as there can be problems with reception if you don't. We brought a Humax box for use in Carvoeiro and it is brilliant. We took it over on the plane and got the guys from the shopping centre on Restaurant Hill to set it all up for us. We liked the fact that we were giving a bit of support to the locals. We bought our TV and dish from them. Enjoy your retirement and Carvoeiro

We bought a 22 inch TV with DVD player in Box ( jumbo ) for E199 euros so no UK advantage.

Do you mean built in FREEVIEW not FREESAT ???. If So Freeview does not work in Portugal,

Freeview does not work in Portugal,

DVB-T Digital Terrestrial Television (the system behind Freeview in the UK) is being launched in Portugal in the spring and analogue transmissions will cease much like the digital switchover in the UK. However, unlike the UK the switchover will be much quicker. Set top boxes are already available in the stores. I don't know what channels, other than RTP1, RTP2, SIC & TVI, will be available.

I recently purchased a Humax box with a 500gb hard drive from Amazon. Shipping was free and the price significantly undercut the price locally. I have to say that it is a brilliant piece of kit. Running with two input lines you can do on the free channels everything that Sky offer on their recording systems and more. You also get the free HD channels. With just one input the box can be rigged to record one channel and watch another but with limitations. Since you set up the system by inputting a post code you can choose a region which offers strong reception out here.

The only minor problem I have found is that you have to go off the freesat selection to get Sky news. It does not appear one the main EPG. To be fair the Sky+ system is probably more intuitive but you soon get used to the change.

on the same subject but on a different theme. the Uk are going to broadcast in Digital using 2MPEG, and this is causing a bit of bother in ireland as the irish system is going to use 4MPEG when the switchover comes. All the NEW tv's in ireland are coming equipped with this dual band incorporated so no problems but any tv over a 1 or so old won't receive the new digital signal and you have to purchase ANOTHER box in order to receive the new 4MPEG signal.

my tv in portugal has a 3 pin plug so I assume the supplier (in alubfeira) imported it. I also assume its 2mpeg and am slightly concerned that when the portuguese swithover comes they will move to 4MPEG as we are being told here in ireland that's it a much better quality signal.

I also assume rightly or wrongly that the switchover wont affect the sky channels.
