Just returned from 10 great days in Cvo. As Aves nr Portimao, recommended on the forum was one of the highlights. 1 smoked meat platter and 1 smoked fish platter. Great portions of fabulous food and good value as well.

Take the monchique turn off the 125 go to 2nd roundabout turn left and follow the signs. Went there last Friday after seeing their ad on algarve daily news to have a look at their deli counter. There isn't one, just a few cakes, asked the sweet little man who was there if there was any smoked produce I could buy and he said no. Asked when there might be food available he said possibly Tuesday. Phoned the number on the website Tuesday and no answer.

Just to clear this up a bit - As Aves was the previous name of the restaurant before it was renamed The Smokehouse. It is in a small urban area just outside Portimão on the road out from the hospital towards Monchique. If you go along motorway from Lagoa towards Portimão - take the Portimão exit and at roundabout head to Portimão, go up the hill and at next roundabout take 1st exit and follow signs to As Aves .

Oh dear!! Sounds like some folk are a little disgruntled over the confusion on the name and directions! Whoops! Just to clear things up once and for all!!!!!

As Aves, in the village of Ladeira do Vau, has been the name of the restaurant for years - formerly a snack bar/churrasqueira. However, since it was taken over last July, the name (meaning The Birds! - very Hitchcock!!) had nothing to do with what it now is A Smokehouse with a Dining area! So, following the mini refurb, and to coincide with the re-opening - it was renamed The Smokehouse cafe and Deli.

However, as with most things here, things aren't quite that simple. Changes to Names, signs etc have to be applied, paid for and approved by various bodies before anything can progress - and yes, you've guessed it, they are still waiting.

To get to the village of Ladeira do Vau is quite simple, from the 125 take the Monchique exit, go over the first roundabout (for Melheiro) and at the second roundabout (which is signposted Ladeira do Vau) turn into the village. From the A22, take the Portimao exit, at the roundabout head towards Portimao - go up the hill, take the first right into Ladeira do Vau, again signposted. Go past the church on the right handside, take the first left, then first right and it is at the bottom on the right. Signs for As Aves are in place on the roundabout and there are two green direction signs in the village.

With regards to Ron500's "just a few cakes" - true! They were not fully open and as their official reopening was not until the following Monday, preparations were well under way for lunch for 40 on the Monday! Plus, the display fridge is well and truly defuncted!!! (any donations for the extortionate amount to repair it gratefully welcome!!

BUT all the produce from the Menu is available and is kept in Fridges in the back - The Smokehouse is open Monday to Friday - all details are on their website http://www.thesmokehousealgarve.com . They are the number one restaurant on Trip Advisor in Portimao and have had an excellent review on http://www.inspirationsalgarve.com.

So there you go, apologies to all who couldn't find it, but if you want to try again, its worth the visit - just ask the 36 people who attended their first Monthly Supper Club last Friday night!

Having read the quote from the owner decided to give it another go. Drove to the smokehouse from Carvoeiro this afternoon with great expectations of salt beef, the best smoked salmon ever tasted and perhaps some smoked cheese, maybe a bit of smoked salmon pate. Arrived at 4.15 and guess what, shut. Don't think I will bother again. I do try to support local businesses but endurance only goes so far, sorry Sue

Hi Ron and everyone else.

Well this has just about been the week from hell!!

For legal reasons which I cannot go into on here, we are no longer based in Ladeira do Vau. It has all happened very quickly, as of Wednesday this week and both my husband and myself are totally gutted, physically and mentally exhausted, after spending the last 6 weeks refurbing, redecorating and relaunching.

We have spent the past 48 hours with lawyers, etc and have, as of today, moved out.

We are both very passionate about what we do and how we do it and have prid ourselves on the produce we have, the comments we receive and the repeat custom speaks for itself.

We are now having a weekend of serious thinking and trying to find a place to relocate as we are NOT GIVING UP!!!

We are very lucky that we have a fabulous team of people and lovely friends surrounding us, otherwise it would be even more difficult.

So I can only apologise Ron, that you have had two wasted journeys, but please don't give up on us just yet. We are nice people, really!
