www.economycarrentals.com (make sure rentals with an "s") will give you a cheap and reliable vehicle. For WELL under 400. Avis? Honestly - what is he on?!!!!

No - you don't need a car where the apartment is - everything is within an easy walk including two small supermarkets. However, paying 100 for the transfer is nearly half of what it will cost to have a vehicle for the whole two weeks!

Stacey, if you get the bus into Portimao, at the bus station there are coach tours advertised that include Monchique. Tide permitting, there are also boat trips to Silves, which we keep saying we will do.

I would endorse looking at Economy car hire. When making a comparison don't forget to add in cost of petrol (and possibly tolls).

To be honest the only trip we all really wanted to do was monchique but we've been before so if we dont get to go then its not a big deal. We're going to have another chat about it tonight but as i said things arent going well at his work so i dont want to put any more pressure on him.

Is there anyone on here thats been for 2 weeks without a car or have came and just hired a car for a few days?

We never hire a car - either walk or get a cab from the bottom of restaurant hill. I don't think it saves me any money, 140euros to and from the airport for instance) - I would have to hire a larger car because of numbers - but I prefer not to drive on holiday - do enough at home.

It is inconvenient if you need to do a big shop but again we eat out all the time and the few snacks we do make - ham and cheese rolls etc we just buy the stuff from the stores in the town.

Thanks rich. We're going to be eating out quite a lot so we will only need to go to the supermarket once or twice and i see that its only 5euros each way so thats cheap. Dave drives for a living so it'll probably do him good to have a break. Its just going to feel weird without a car because we've always had one on holiday

Hi,

If you have not already paid your transfers have another look at Economy Car Hire. I tried Sat 10th for a fortnight, 33 year old driver and it quoted a Clio for £239 with Rentauto (don't know them) or a Punto for £251 with Travel Rent (mentioned by others). Might be tight for 3 people with 3 cases but if you can suffer from the airport to CVO it is fine for getting around.

You may want to get Dave to register with them first, then get a quote as it allows you to see more choices and who the renters are.

Either way enjoy your holiday. :D

We have been to Carvoeiro several times without a car but a couple of times we have hired a car for 3 or 4 days from the Carvoeiro Sol hotel. If you call into reception at the hotel they will quote you a price. There is a notice board outside the hotel. Sorry, my other half, Bill, cannot remember the price. Ferragudo is a good trip on the land train - 10 euros per person.

No car this time. Plenty of relaxation, a little wine and plenty of good food.

Cheers! Hes just sent me a text to say hes looking at car hire at the moment, the transfer company also has car hire so hes getting a quote but ill pass that website on.

He said the reason avis was more expensive is because the insurance covers completely everything, so if you damage or even scratch the car you dont pay. Dont ask me though because i dont know anything about it!! Hopefully we will get something sorted!
