This year we arent hiring a car for the full 2 weeks, might hire for a few days to do our trips. if not then will we struggle without a car? is it expensive for taxis to supermarket or somewhere like praia da rocha? im happy to sit on the beach most of the time but i know dave will get bored when hes not at the golf.

I want to go horse riding, where is this stables ive heard about. does anybody have a english website for them and will i need a car to get there?

I don't know, by the time you have priced up transfers, taxis etc., it might be worth having a small car for the duration.

where did I spell it wrong? dave wanted to hire a car but we priced it and as far as we could see it was going to cost around £400 for the two weeks with insurance, he was fine with paying that as he loves to have the car but Im happy with no car tho i think he would like one for a few days at least. I see that there is a car hire place near us so i suppose we can see once we get there. Our transfer is working out at 100euro for all of us plus hes getting picked up and returned everytime he goes golfing but i dont think the course is far from us anyway.

this is the first time we've ever booked everything ourself - apartment, flights. last time we booked everything as a package with style holidays but we needed a car because our villa was quite remote

OK, taxis to Gramoucho/Pinta golf courses are around €8-€10 each way. A taxi to Praia da Rocha will be around €20 each way, alternatively you could get a taxi or the tourist train (Tuesday & Friday only) to Ferragudo and then you can get a water taxi across to Praia da Rocha for €3 each way. A taxi to Ferragudo will be around €12 each way, sorry don't know how much the train will be.

The riding stables opposite the International School on the EN125 have now closed. I was told that the nearest ones now are on the way to Messines from Silves but I don't know where they are as yet. A taxi out to Messines will be expenisve I would think, around €30+ each way.

A taxi to Intermarche will be around €5 each way.

There was a riding school near Pera but that's a fair old journey without a car. Shame you can't rent a couple of horses for the fortnight.

Lol yeah a horse would be handy! im not a regular horse rider, only been a few times when i was younger but just thought it might be nice to go a trek while im there. Doesnt matter! The water taxi sounds good, ill have to see if i can find out times etc.

No worries. With regards to the water taxi from Ferragudo, it is run by Sueste restaurant down on the harbour front by the lifeboat house. He doesn't really have a timetable but just goes as and when people want. His telephone number is (00351) 963 468 984, just give him a call and arrange a time to meet him in Ferragudo and he will take you across. He will then arrange a time to come and pick you up. Oh, Monday's is his day off. Have fun x

Thanks! Thats really handy, its not a big deal if we dont get ti go but i had a really good time last time so would be nice to go back. If we hire a car for a few days then going to monchique again, liked it up there.

Just looked at Europcar on the Easyjet site and you can get a 107 or similar for £233 from 8/9 - 22/9.

I think his quote was with avis, i thought it was steep too. Oh well im sure we will survive without a car anyway, whole point of the holiday was to relax so im sure he'll get used to not driving all the time once hes been there a few days. Has anyone used the car hire place in carvoeiro?

I would reconsider not hiring a car Stacey - you'd be surprised how the odd trip here and there suddenly becomes a major effort (and expense with taxi fares) without a hire car - especially if you're staying out of the way like us.

I booked our hire cars just over a week ago for this Thursday - Ford Fiesta for £200 for the full two weeks, then £30 for the excess insurance. By the time you've worked it out, most of the time it's cheaper hiring a car what with the cost of airport transfers etc. If your holiday was for 1 week it would be a no brainer as the airport taxi transfers alone are 80-120 euros and a 1 week hire would be £100.... 2 week hires are not as good value because it means you'd need to justify the extra weeks hire, but we need to take some our party back to the airport early so makes sense for us.

We are staying right in town, the top of restaurant hill i think. To be honest the only trip we all really wanted to do was monchique but we've been before so if we dont get to go then its not a big deal. We're going to have another chat about it tonight but as i said things arent going well at his work so i dont want to put any more pressure on him.


Is there anyone on here thats been for 2 weeks without a car or have came and just hired a car for a few days?
